This is sounds like a very exciting event.

Do you have a press release?

Would be great to see a feature in a mag to bring in more teams & spectators.

This looks interesting. I know of a couple of 5EXI owners that would be interested. Especially one that keeps going on at me saying Honda is more reliable than Rover.

It was in May 1998 that the Guild of Motor Endurance ran a Six Hour at Mallory Park. On this the 10th anniversary, the Six Hour is back again, May 16th 2008.

As with all Guild of Motor Endurance events, you will need a hand built sportscar to take part. Something like a Ginetta component car or a Sportster special, a classic Austin Healey or a modern Lotus or TVR.

Each two car team will be representing a specialist sportscar manufacturer, and a team will consist of four drivers, a team manager and a mechanic. The focus of activity will be on keeping the cars running at the required average speed for 324 miles. Straight forward on the face of it, but in reality working out car and driver changes and re-fuelling, it can become a challenge. Even presuming your preparation has been thorough and you don’t have any mechanical problems some ongoing maintenance might be needed. But that’s what Guild of Motor Endurance events have always been about.

While the main control at the end of the pit lane will be busy recording outgoing cars, incoming cars will have the choice of using either the paddock entry, i.e. for re-fuelling, or using the opening in the Armco barrier on the pit straight, i.e. for driver changes, normally closed for race meetings.

The format that was successful in ’98 will be repeated with only a few changes. Mainly having two cars in each team instead of one. This should allow a team to keep going even if one of the cars runs into problems. With 30 cars on the circuit, and another 30 cars with their drivers ready to take over in the pits, it could well be a team manager making the correct logistical decisions that takes the credit. Being an endurance test and not a race will mean you won’t need a competition licence.

For those wishing to come along in their sportscars and watch, access to all Mallory Park spectator areas will be free. This includes the paddock, where you will also be able to hear commentary on the progress of each team.

If you would like to enter and wish to make contact with another owner of a car to form a team, please contact the secretary of the event: carolbury@hotmail.co.uk Tel eve: 01386 45556, mobile 07739 173995.

SIX HOUR 2008 - 16th May Questions & Answers

1. Does a team have to have a team manager and mechanic?
A: No. But on reflection after the event you may wish you had.

2. What does ‘representing a manufacturer’ mean?
A: Just that if you happen to own a Westfield and get together and form a team with someone else who also owns one, then your team will be representing the Westfield marque.

3. Please explain: “A manufacturer with more than one team representing them will have all their car performances amalgamated.”
A: If there were two teams of Westfields, it would require all four cars to complete the six hours trouble free to do any good. So teams representing the same marque may well want to look out for each other.

4. How often are we allowed to make driver changes?
A: As often as you want to, or need to. Your team (or Team Manager) will have to consider the best way to split up each 40 lap, hour long, period between the four drivers. A straight forward driver change is
perfectly alright, but to stay penalty free the team would need to change cars each time they came into the pits.

5. While one of the team cars is out on the circuit, can the other car refuel at the pump in the paddock?
A: Yes, but keep in mind that as it is strictly forbidden to re-fuel from a fuel container, there could be a few cars waiting to refuel. And the window of opportunity before you would be needed back in the pits, ready to go back onto the circuit, could be just a matter of minutes. Yet another logistic for the Team Manager.

6. If we complete the 40 laps in under the hour what happens then?
A: Importantly you do not start a 41st lap and are penalised. On completion of the teams 40th lap, whichever car is on the circuit, it should pull into the pits. Hopefully your team manager will have signalled the car to come in anyway. When the few minutes have elapsed that you had to spare, your team should prepare to move a car towards the out control at the end of the pit lane, in readiness to clock out back onto the circuit for another hour. Only be careful you do not approach the control too early.

7. How is a record kept of how many laps we will have completed?
A: Each Team will be given a time card as they start their first hour. A large digital clock will display the time next to the main control at the end of the pit lane. This will record how many laps you have completed each hour. Also, as a car comes into the pits, and to avoid any delays, the Team Manager may well be waiting to take the Time Card, and then take it to the other team car waiting to go out onto the circuit.

8. Are we only allowed to pass on the straights?
A: No, cars may pass wherever their drivers believe it is safe to do so. And because of the wide range of differing performances of cars, and of drivers experience, all crews will need to keep an eye on their mirrors. Note the word crews, in the car you will be working together. If your team needs to make up time and your car has the power to pass on the straight, then that would be favourite. On the other hand there may be other cars which are less powerful but corner at higher speeds. For them, to keep up their average, they may need to overtake you through the bends.

9. Do I need a competition licence to take part?
A: No. This is not a six hour race. It is not a motor sporting competition. It is a test of endurance, the only objective is to finish.

10. I only use my car for racing, can I enter it?
A: Sorry No. This is an event for road going, road legal, sportscars only.

11. How does the marking system work?
A: Simple: 240 laps = 240 marks. Each lap a team completes, they will be given 1 mark.
Any penalties a team earns will be deducted.

SIX HOUR ENDURANCE – 21 May 1998
by Gari Jones, Liege

This was to be a novel format for a circuit event, with both driver and co-driver on board throughout giving a mixture somewhere between a rally and an endurance test, with the co-driver controlling the pace of the car in conjunction with the pit crew - in our case son Nathan and his mum. The objective was to complete exactly 37 laps of the circuit in each hour, with all pitstops, re-fuelling and driver changes to be accomplished within that time.

We were kindly loaned a car by the Liege Motor Company who entered us in their 850cc Reliant engined Liege. Leeza Rose, a motoring programme and chat show presenter with Channel 1 cable TV was to be my co-driver. Never having met Leeza until we arrived at Mallory Park, I had visions of a Ruby Wax-type character jabbering away about colonic irrigation while we thrashed endlessly round and round the track for six hours. In actual fact, Leeza turned out not only to be very beautiful but also a very accomplished driver. She also turned out to have driven at Mallory Park before, a fact she kept to herself until self-preservation drove her to giving desperately needed driving lessons over the intercom during my erratic first stint.

The memory of sitting alongside Leeza when, trying to make up time later on, she drove our little car in a full blooded drift around the outside of a big 3.9 litre Cobra at some 75mph on the long, long Gerrards bend will remain with me forever…. as will the grey hairs that suddenly sprouted as I tried desperately to disappear down into the passenger footwell. The other incident that springs only too readily to mind was bawling my head off as we charged down into the hairpin at about 70mph, overtaking cars on the inside as they braked and we didn’t. With solid armco barrier rushing up dead ahead I only opened my eyes again when I heard Leeza falling about with laughter over the intercom - she’d made it. Red faced under my helmet, I just wished I’d switched the intercom off before loosing control of my vocal chords. But at least I hadn’t lost control of anything else.

We were surprised to learn that our car was actually leading the field of 27 cars at the end of the first hour, not because we were the fastest on the track by any means, but, having completed the 37 laps we had enough time in hand to accomplish more driver changes than anyone else.

Then disaster! Before the start we had checked everything over on the car except one minor little thing - fuel. We had started out with only half a tankful and, nearly sharing one whole brain between the two of us, fairly soon realised we would have to build up time in the second hour to squeeze in an extra fuel stop. We decided to run through without a driver change for the first half of our second hour, then refuel and change drivers and once back on the track we would try to build up enough time in hand to get in another driver change before the end of the hour if possible.

So we stopped as planned only to find we hadn’t got a bean between us to buy fuel at the paddock pumps! The best we could scrounge from a highly bemused spectator was £10 which would only give us another half tankful. We grabbed the money gratefully, sloshed some fuel in and stormed back onto the track with Leeza at the wheel. The best excuse we could come up with afterwards was that, out of all the Formula One races we’d watched on TV, not once had we noticed Michael Schumacher getting out the small change to pay for his fuel during a pit stop….

After the crazy pantomime we were nearly 8 minutes down with only 25 minutes to go in the hour. The planned driver change was drooped and Leeza set to with a vengeance pulling time back hand over fist. After some laps at this pace we thought there might even be a chance of squashing in a driver change just before the end of the hour, then…disaster number two.

A competitor had gone off the track at Gerrards, the yellow flags came out and then the safety car came out slowing us down to 40mph while they cleared the car away. That took nearly 15 minutes and this time we were well and truly stuffed. By the time the safety car pulled off the track we had just 8 minutes left and there was no way, so at the end of the hour we were 3 measly laps short of 37. Unable to make up for the deficit in the next hour, we were no longer in overall contention although we subsequently managed to get in all our laps, driver changes and refuelling stops (and Leeze’s two visits to the loo!) over the next four hours with only one or two minor dramas.

We eventually finished a little euphoric that we had made it to the end but annoyed at our unnecessarily early fuel stop and the subsequent yellow flag incident which had ruled us out of overall contention so early on. The car had run faultlessly right through although checking the engine after the event, we found the dip stick hadn’t been made long enough to reach the oil. Happily, after adding a few pints, it grew to the correct length. Next time (if there is one), we’ll try and remember to check the oil, to take some pennies along AND fill up with fuel BEFORE the start.

Gari Jones.

Hi James.

I've been interested in this event. But is touch and go at the moment due to gear selection problems. Or lack of.

Have next week off so hopefully will have an answer either way by Wednesday. If that's not too late.

Default 7 page write-up in Oct Kit Car magazine

Ian Hyne has written a really in depth 7 page article on the Six Hour 2008 in the October issue of KitCar magazine. Many pictures and an insight into the trials and tribulations of keeping a two car team running penalty free in a six hour endurance.

Also, if you missed out ordering the Six Hour DVD it's still available, just go to:

http://www.guildofmotorendurance.co.uk/2008/dvd.html

October issue of KitCar magazine out now.
