Default steering column

Got loads done today and have finally finished all my drilling and riveting.... hands hurt now..
Been looking at the steering column what have you guys done at the lower end with regard to shortening it. Have you welded it or just shear pinned it. I don't have a welder but would rather go and get it done if this is the safest route to go down.

I got a new rover 25 steering Column and the spline U/J from a 1994 Rover 214 it fitted with out any mods allthough found that the little bit of box section that marlin supply had to be a certain way round to stop the column from wobbling

I did not have to do anything with mine.

I just fitted it with the donor column.
