Hi James,
It depends how confident you are with wiring!, I'm a great fan of rip it out and replace it with a custom one (which I build). Autosparks do very nice looms for standard cars so they may not be able to help unless you want to buy a triumph loom and adjust/butcher it (which isn't a bad idea as it will come with all the right connectors). If you want to do it yourself then car builder solutions do a electrical module which has all the realys, fuses, flashers etc so you just need to attach and run the wires to the right place. Haynes do a book on vehicle wiring which is very useful.
If you are using a classic style engine with carb, dissy etc then it doesn't matter which engine you use as it will only need a feed to the coil, alternator, starter motor and a fuel pump if it is electric.
If you build one from scratch yourself then the more planning and sketching of wiring diagrams before you start cutting wires will help in the long run you can quite easily get overwhelmed when you have 70 wires in front of you and don't know which one goes where!!
Hope that helps
Chris
