Clem Herselman 50000 0 1 100 My car was built from a body that was changed to accept South African parts. It has a 1968 VW1500 pan and running gear. it has a VW 1600 Twinport motor. 5 cars were built of which mine is the only 1 remaining on the road. 2 ohers are being restored for drag racing. The car was built in East London, South Africa around 1972 and is called a 'HAHN SP'. Any information as to the origins of the car will be graefully acceped. Thanks Clem
Ben Herrett 1700 2 6 250 The car was purchased ready built but the engine had been removed-1600 x/flow with lots of Burton bits. This was stripped & rebuilt but perfect as I found later that it had only covered 6k miles. The main problem was overheating which, when looking later at a box full of receips had seemed to be a big problem from day one. The cure was to enlarge and reduct the air outlet from the rad.CURED.Has been from Kent to Exeter show twice with no probs. THE CAR.Built between 83 &86 on an Eagle chassis beleived to be used for beach buggies and altered to fit Bonito bodyshell.Front susp. is total Beetle with disc brakes.Rear is type 2 box with coil overs and torque rods removed. Engine is 1600 x/flow uprated but on 32/36 down draught webber giving about 120bhp at flywheel.Tyres are 205.60.15 on6.5 wheels[yes the tyres really are too wide for the rims] but it rides well on them. The chassis is well over engineered and heavy butis ultra rigid[jack the front wheel and the back comes up as well] as the floor is 18g steel! Handling is'interesting' with the rear dampers blown [Spax adjustables] but when good and with everything set up it is remarkably good for the age of the car. WhenI bought it [£500} it was red -completely - with brown leather cloth dash and panels, black &white seats & and brilliant blue foam back household carpet every bit of which was glued in place. It took 2 months to get it out! The back end was altered completely as was the interior [red carpet, black panels & dash black & white seats which are now being recovered in red/black] stripes were added and blacked in 'cut outs'. Vents were added to the rear deck as it gets b.... hot in the engine compartment. The exhaust took 5 goes to get it right although it has been called everything from a masterpiece to an abortion however it works and gives what I think is the right noise. It also seems to help it give about 38mpg on a run. I am now in the process of altering the front end [a kit car is never finished] and hope to have it ready for the Detling Show this year[2006]. The car I am talking of is that pictured above at Detling 2005.Yes thats mine! Incidentally I think there were 28 made over here but I only know of 4. Where are all the rest? Anyone who knows the whereabouts of any others [being used or hidden away please let me know.] If you have any questions please e-mail and I will try and answer them.
Ben Herrett 1500 4 0 250 Its the one in the pic.Ithas an eagle after market chassis[very over engineered]and a 1600 x/flow eng.with about120Bhp{flywheel}Very thick lay up and V.strong shell.4speed VW transaxle.Rear is altered to coil overs.Such a smooth body its quick as I checked the speedo to 120 as it does not read further. The shape seems to push it down onto the road well and for the age of the designit handles remarkably well.Figertip steering at 70. It devoures hot hatches which is fun as I am not young any more, have a white full beard,am known as Papa Smurf, and still a kid at heart[read boy racer].No 2 of these cars are alike as the last one appears to have been produced around 88 but they have a big following in Holland and Germany. See ft bonito site. I am at the moment doing some alteration, which I havnt stopped doing inthe last 4 years since I bought it[£500] but hope it will be at the Detling Show.Any one who reads this please come and say 'hi.' and ask any questions as like all kit owners I love to talk about my cars.[email if you cant wait] If by some chance you own one please get in touch so that I can find a few more of us as I only know of 3 over here at present. If you know of one going Begging for a home[whatever the state of it] my Grandson would dearly like to get one and if it were free he would be your friend forever. I must add that hes 19, is very short of cash and hates me as I will not let him near mine bet he does have a Ginetta hes rebuilding. Our regards to all Kit Car owners, builders and 'likers' and anyone who reads this site.
