Based on effective date of registration for your engine. In all cases we are assuming that the manufactured date of your engine is not in question.
 
CO = Carbon Monoxide
HC = Hydrocarbons
 
Effective date before 1st August 1975
 
Visual check only
 
Effective date between 1st August 1975 and 31st July 1986
 
Visual check plus CO level at 4.5% or less and HC at 1200ppm or less
 
Effective date between 1st August 1986 and 31st July 1992
 
Visual check plus CO level at 3.5% or less and HC at 1200ppm or less
 
Effective date between 1st August 1986 (3 wheeled vehicles)
 
Visual check plus CO level at 3.5% or less and HC at 1200ppm or less

Effective date after 1st August 1992
 
Fast Idle Test (2500 to 3000rpm)
CO<=0.3%
HC<= 200ppm
Lambda between 0.97 and 1.03
 
Idle Test
(450 to 1500rpm) CO<= 0.5%
 
Effective date between 1st August 1992 and 31st July 1995
 
and manufactured without a Catalytic converter

Carry out a CAT test using vehicle specific limits
 
where an exact match in the analyser database (VOSA thing) cannot be found
