John,

It's interesting you metion the boost control, as I was going to ask about that.

I guess you fitted a dawes-esk device (ball and spring job), which if it has the same effect on your car, as it did on my friend's car, the boost coming in, is rather like a switch.

Does the rover normally run closed loop boost control if running a solenoid valve?

A VX220 turbo has very progressive boost, to reduce the chances of mid corner "chug chug, kabooom" style boost build.

Although you can modulate the throttle to an extent with your right foot, would it be worth getting an adjustable electronic boost controller? From what I recall the dawes devices can cause pretty hefty boost spikes, and a decent electronic controller should help reduce these, amongst other things and give you more control in general.
