Just my pennys worth-I have an e36 2.5 m50 in my e30 chassis,with an e30 diff at the back.After a little searching, I found that the e36 2.5d prop fitted to the front and I mated this with an e30 shaft at the rear- the splines matched perfectly, rear section was shortened and balanced.
