Flocking Dash!

Having spent ages trying to get a descent paint finish on my dash I've given up and decided to get it flocked.

For those of you that have done this, did you do the whole of the grp dash moulding or just the 'inside bit', ie leaving the part outside of the screen that the wiper mechanism's attached to?

Thanks for any help/thoughts/responses.

Tim

I had mine covered up to the screen, no special reason, just my preference.

I used this company, at the time they were near Martlsham, Sufolk.

The only comment I would make is it does tend to pick up the dust and grit, but from only my point of view was worth it.

Thanks, Steve.

The company you mentioned have given me the best quote so far, so it's encouraging that you've used them already.

I was thinking of just going up to the screen too, so I think you've helped me to make my mind up!

Thanks again
Tim

What was the price you were given? I wasnt interested in flocking until i saw this company is really close to me. 15miles.
I was going to cover it in alcantara but i think getting a flat finish will be hard.

Cheers

Steve

It was around £140 I believe, although it was around 4 years ago.

Thanks for the reply.
Just been quoted the same price for the dashboard.

I took mine to Suffolk Flocking Services a weekend ago. They're going to charge me a maximum of £150 for the dash and a couple of other small pieces.

The guy I spoke to had just recently taken over the flocking business from the guy who used to run it. They showed me a couple of samples that they had been working on and they looked really good.

£140 seems about the going rate for a 5Exi dash - prices seem to be based on size and complxity - the Exi dash is large but quite easy to do I was told.

When I get it back (later this week hopefully) I'll post a pic

I emailed Suffolk Flocking Services and got a reply he said he was doing a marlin dash at the moment along with an engine cover so I guess that is yours. :)

Im only in basingstoke, but the price tag seems a bit steep for me, will give alcantara (fake) a go and then if its ok live with it , if not flock it.

I need to resolve my dash, as Im close to getting a windscreen and getting it fitted.

Hoes is your build coming along tim, got any build photos anywhere?
Are you doing a VAg build or rover?

I'm using a Type R engine with a Z-Cars loom and ECU.

I'm close to getting the bodywork fitted - just the dash to do and a couple of niggly problems with the wiring to sort:

*The fuel pump stopped working after about 20 seconds when trying to start the engine for the first time. Having checked the wiring it's only getting 5v not 12v.

*The hazards are constantly tripping the relay whether on or off. I'm aware that there is a fault in the loom but as we used a different siwtch thought it might not have been a problem but it seems that I've either wired the switch incorrectly or the fault is making a difference. I'm using a durite swich.

The starter also failed to engage, but this could be because we've been turning the engine over by hand (we've hand it nearly four years now - slow build) and the ring is out of sync with the starter.

I also made a school boy error and stuffed up the instruments. I have a Race Technology Dash2 unit which I have incorporated into the rover instrument pod (I think there's a picture or two on the forum of it). The four buttons for it are mounted in the clear plastic cover of the instrument pod. I did up the mounting nuts for the buttons and used a small amount of superglue to stop them vibrating loose, but forgot my basic 'CSI' and that the police use superglue to find fingerprints - the fumes 'stick' to the greese of the print, or in my case the fumes just clouded the clear plastic, so I have to make a new cover.

I don't have any recent pics on my PC at the moment - they're all on my portable hard drive which is stuck at work! I need to take some more as I haven't done any recently and then will post a couple.

How's your build?

nutter 3rd December 2010 09:36

Thats a list of niggly problems alright.

I made my own loom, and so far have not had any problems.
I also have a durite hazard switch.

Im onto the bodywork, but am stuck as I cant source a windscreen from anywhere. Heated or not heated. I dont mind which, except if I go for not heated, i will need to install a heater of some sort to get through the IVA demist requirement.

I have a fairly comprehensive build diary and photos.

If anyone has a suitable windscreen going spare?? Lotus Elise S1 I believe. Please let me know....

I got my screen from Marlin

The last car I built instead of the usual 'plumbed' heaters i used some electric ones from Car Builder Solutions. They passed SVA fine, and were quite compact units. I think CBS now do other models (some of which required blumbing in) but which are smaller and lighter than the Rover units.

Just been to the garage and taken some photos but the resolution/size is too big for the forum! I'll try and resize them somehow, or if you want me to PM them to you, let me know.

BTW the dash/engine covers you mentioned are mine!

I have already spoke to them over the phone, although it says delievry is £40 they cant post an elise screen as the curvature wont allow it "to fit in the box".

I have since sourced a screen, although not a heated one, so I will be fitting in a heater.

I have offered the screen up to the dash and roll cage, but I have a huge space between the roll cage and the screen edge. Enough to get your fingers through!!
I think I need to adjust the roll cage mounts........

I also collected my seats on saturday. :D
