Goodwood Breakfast Club – Classic Car Sunday

Countdown to Goodwood – Part 1
Building inner front wheel arches has been on my ‘To Do’ list for years now. :rolleyes: However, recently, I was at the Ace to meet a friend attending a bike gathering. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 I was allowed inside the car park and the Swordfish generated a bit of interest. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 Including Mark Wilsmore, the Ace owner, who came over for a chat when I arrived. :cool: Anyway, with the bonnet up, a Spitfire 1500 owner was singing the praises of having a radiator shroud. Countdown to Goodwood – Part 2
Lipstick Giving my car a yellow nose band really helped it to stand out. :cool: Unfortunately, it also highlights the grime of driving around London. Although, I will leave it until closer to Goodwood before sanding the paint runs out. (To ensure the paint has hardened as much as possible before I do.) I find that designing all the sheet metal parts using CAD works best every time !

What about a shroud that is made of GRP and is part of the bonnet? make using your CAD and test it to see that it just misses the rad when the bonnet is closed. Maybe I'm not anywhere close to seeing the whole picture though?

Mitchelkitman – That could work, but I don’t want to add any extra weight to the bonnet. (Which is already quite heavy due to the extra strengthening I did before.) Similarly, I will design the inner wheel arches to be fixed in the engine bay. (Even though the original Spitfire bonnet had the wheel arches attached.) First Steps I used a length of box section steel to hammer the edges of the side panels 90 degrees. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 Each side panel will be two sections rivetted together. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 Obviously, this would be easier if I had bigger sheets of aluminium to play with. Slow Progress
Even though I had cut out the side panels, I went back to double check the templates Passenger side was as expected. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 But the driver’s side was not. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 Given that I cut that side of the bonnet off completely, the joint is thicker. :rolleyes: Nothing a slight trim wouldn’t take care off. The next job was the gearbox cover join cover. My original plan was to make this in a single piece. But the more I looked at it, the harder it seemed to be, given my limited skills/tools. (As I could have simply hammered it into place.) (Which was hard to do on the gravel drive.) Got to Goodwood and there was a holding pen before the circuit opened at 7am. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 Chatted to the owners of these two Hot Rods, who were also on the ‘Rods ‘n’ Sods’ forum. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 The ’32 Ford was an IVA build, so we had an interesting chat about re-body rules, etc. As it turned out, both the rods were being displayed on the track, a bit further along from here. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 Whereas, I was in the pits. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 Looking back at my old photos from the 2019 Revival, this was the same pit area back then! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Rc...=w1152-h860-no I was able to get a good look around before the gates opened to the public at 8am. (I’ll post more photos another day, after I’ve gone through my GoPro video footage.) It was a really good event and I can’t tell you how proud I was to be part of it. :cool: Almost lost my voice by the time it ended at 12 noon, as I talked to a LOT of people. The more people heard about the HUGE amount of work that went into it, the more they liked it. I have a small collection of build photos in a folder that helped to illustrate that is more custom than kit. It really was a show of two halves. Quite a few people came over on the basis they had no idea what it was. (R-L = E-Type, TR7, 911, WFT? ;) ) Unfortunately, my GoPro didn’t film me driving through the tunnel, under the track, to park in the pits. :( (As I didn't notice it had switched from video to camera mode when we left the holding pen.) Good to see you had a great time at Goodwood. I hope ending being totally soaked didn't spoil the fun. Shame for the blotches on the bonnet though, maybe they can be polished out!? I like your radiator shroud fabrication. I didn't notice many Heralds or Vitesses having these. I saw them mainly on Spitfires - I don't know if that's something specific to Spitfires. When the time comes, I will try to drive my car without it first, but as I have a Spit engine, I might need to make one in the future too. Anyway, it's great to see you're out and about enjoying your rides in Swordfish! |
