Watching this with interest .......

And , as hard as it might be to believe ...I read it right to the end !!

molleur 30th August 2017 19:50

Beautiful car and a splendid write-up!
Good luck with the sale.

Mister Towed 30th August 2017 20:07

Been Googling your own name then, Gary?

Jaguartvr 30th August 2017 20:13

I thought he was going to be buried in it!
Good luck with the sale.

lancelot link 30th August 2017 20:15

Not quite ....lol ...I had a message from someone who pointed the advert out to me ... I am genuinely watching this with interest , I think S*mmio's are undervalued ...I think that's partly my fault for pushing them as cheap ...I hope your different approach to marketing them works out ...

We all want our creations to return a worthy amount ....lets see where this goes ....They have made these numbers before ...

Mister Towed 30th August 2017 20:37

Thanks for reminding me I said that, Jag, but I've decided cremation is the way forward...

Truth is, I've absolutely loved my time with the Spyder but I need the space so I can get on with my 356. I'm not desperate to sell either, but I am hoping someone else will fall in love with the car and enjoy it to the full.

I'll keep you posted.

redratbike 30th August 2017 22:25

Ha ha, thanks RRB. Funnily enough I've had quite a few messages from people complimenting me on both the car and the ad, and this one's fairly typical -

'What a beautiful car !
But what an even more incredible description, not ever seen an ad like that before.

You could teach a lot of the high class car dealers a lesson or two !

Fantastic ! Good luck with the sale.'

As for the length and detail in the ad, I believe that if you're going to sell someone their dream car you might as well do it properly.

In 48hrs the ad's had over 2,000 views and 160 are watching, so it appears to have attracted quite a lot of attention. I can't say I'm surprised as it gets positive attention from complete strangers every single time I drive it.

I'm sure there will be people who fall in love with the car and the (true) story of how I came to build it, and before long it will find a new home. When that happens I'll be genuinely sad to see it go as it's been a wonderful experience building and owning it. I can't thank Gary J enough for creating the shell, or James Martin enough for inspiring me to get off my backside and build my own dream car when his broke down on the Mille Miglia.

Oh, and if anyone on the forum is genuinely interested in buying my Spyder, you'd better be quick as I have a feeling it's not going to hang around for long.

micky1mo 31st August 2017 09:22

That is some listing !!!!!! :first:

Best of luck in the sale. :biggrin1:

Mister Towed 31st August 2017 11:30

Thanks Micky. Just had an enquiry from an interested party in Switzerland, so might need to fit a quieter exhaust...

Paul L 31st August 2017 12:07

Mister Towed – The advert’s wording, photos and price tag are all worthy of your outstanding car.

My thanks for both your build and on the road threads, which have been a great inspiration to me during my build.

Although I now realise that I made a very big tactical error by not driving to Norfolk while my car was just in primer. :icon_sad:

At the time, I thought my grey paint and lack of roundels would have lowered the tone of the magnificent ‘Three Musketeers’.

Also, like Jag, I distinctly remember you saying your son would not inherit your car when you died as you were getting buried in it. :icon_wink:

However, if I can get back on the road before you sell I will definitely arrange a visit.

Good luck with the sale and I look forward to your 356 Outlaw build.

Cheers, Paul. :)

PS
Can you forward the ebay link to the organisers of that Italian day event?

Barber 31st August 2017 18:01

Good luck with the sale Mr Towed, the latest mods are excellent. The need for space is understandable, Jag has a similar issue, (even if he can squeeze about 6 cars on his driveway).

I haven't even paid a deposit on my Tribute build yet (only days away) - always targeted to be my daily driver, but have already been thinking of a proper project. Scottie's car is very enticing, but I can't quite shake off the Minari bee in my bonnet. Keep posting update on the Outlaw.

Jaguartvr 31st August 2017 19:54

I sold one of my Mitsubishi GTO's this week to get some room.
New cunning plan currently being hatched.

lancelot link 31st August 2017 19:57

Towed ..we both ended up Spyder builder/owners for very similar reasons , both can blame a James , not James Martin in my case but the somewhat unluckier James Dean ....
When the car sells , I'm hoping you wont be a stranger and the 356 build will appear in the classic roadster section of this forum for us to follow too ...

Mister Towed 1st September 2017 06:55

Thanks for the support everyone, my ad currently has 186 watching and I've had some genuine enquiries, but nothing concrete yet - one chap who arranged to view has pulled out for personal reasons, but he did say he was going to have to run it past his wife before coming to see the car...

As I'm not desperate to sell, if it hasn't sold by the end of September I'll withdraw the ad and carry on enjoying it when the weather's dry.

I'll just have to work round the space issue by moving the Spyder onto the drive and putting a cover over it when I'm working on the Outlaw Speedster, which will have its own build thread once I get started.

Ifi it doesn't sell, I may or may not put the Spyder up for sale next spring, it just depends on how I manage juggling the two cars around in my garage and whether I can actually bear to part with the Spyder.

Paul, your car may still get its chance to play d'Artagnan to our Athos, Porthos and Aramis, you just need to get your paint finished first or you'll end up with gloss envy. Have you thought of renting a lock-up for a month, buying a gun and cheap compressor and spraying it? Could be cheaper in the long run than carrying on trying to hand paint it on your drive and you'd definitely end up with a better finish.

Jaguartvr 1st September 2017 07:00

Have a look out on Ebay for a decent cover. I picked one up for an Alfa Spider that fits the 250 perfectly and was as in new condition for the grand sum of £25, new it was £175.
You just have to be patient. I also managed to get 2 covers for the Mitsubishi's and one for the Jag made by the same company and the most I paid was £40.

swifty 1st September 2017 21:18

Good luck with the sale MrT watching this one with interest.

Have you placed an add else were.

DaveP 8th September 2017 06:28

Thanks Dave, glad you like both car and ad. :)

smash 14th September 2017 11:16

A lot of effort gone into both car and advert and it does look fabulous!

*edit* Sold?

Mister Towed 14th September 2017 12:42

Yup, it's going to have a new life playing Cinderella in a big, heated warehouse somewhere, alongside an awful lot of other classics and period racers, so it won't be lonely.

Will be collected next week and I'll take a picture of her leaving on the trailer if I can still see through the tears in my eyes. :(

I just hope the new owner can find the time to take her out for some exercise occasionally.

Won't be discussing anything so vulgar as money on the forum though as I don't think that would be fair to the buyer, but I had already turned down offers of £12k, £17.5k and £18.5k from other interested parties.

Right, time to start getting the parts together for my Outlaw Speedster build. :)

smash 14th September 2017 14:10

Well done that man!

Outlaw Speedster sounds awesome - Pegasus stickers on order...

redratbike 14th September 2017 16:25

Well done Mr towed you aimed high and got it ,good luck with the 356 and the different route you are taking with that one

DaveP 14th September 2017 17:48

well done that man :0)

Paul L 14th September 2017 20:18

Mr T - Congratulations on the sale, you deserved a great price.

Looking forward to the next build.

Good luck, Paul. :)

davecymru 16th September 2017 06:15

Just catching up on developments on the forum and found this! As i said elsewhere, i'm sorry to hear you've sold, but i know that things move on and you've certainly had fun in the car :)

Having also sold my Sammio a few years back and having gone down the Triumph Special route in my advert it's good to now see you selling yours from the other angle and allowing us to put some hard evidence behind the theories that we've all had the for past few years on how to sell these cars!

I hope you're happy with how it went and i look forward to seeing your next project evolve :)

DC

Mister Towed 16th September 2017 07:12

Thanks DC, nice to see you back on the forum. Yes, I will really miss my Spyder, it's been a fantastic ownership experience both to build and to enjoy for the four years that I've had it on the road. But, I really needed the space so I can get on with my Outlaw 356.

That partly explains the sale price - I didn't really want to part with it and I'm not desperate for the money, so I turned down some serious offers in the high £k-teens because I'd rather have kept it than accepted less than what it meant to me. After it hadn't sold by the time I got back from Goodwood last weekend I expected to be keeping it until at least next spring, but then I got a phone call...

Anyway, I will put up a final pic of my pride and joy leaving home and starting its new life with a new partner. :(

And... I might just also secure a picture of it in its new home when I get around to taking up the new owner's kind offer of a tour round their collection. :)
