My Sammio is Vitesse based and I can see the bigger callipers won,t fit to Herald hubs, what is your solution?

As I am a were there are two types of calliper a "type 14" and a "type16".
The type 16 has a bigger pistons and pads so I will use these along with a remote servo.
This off-course might change to a dual line system with built-in servo, I'll just wait and see how the original Triumph brakes perform.
You must remember that this car, when finished, will be less than half the weight of the original so this small up-grade should make a sizable difference. :becky:

I also had to find out that almost everything between the balljoint and the trunion is different between Herald and Vitesse. That is: the upright/axle, the hub, the braking disc, the caliper, the caliper mounting bracket and the steering arm. The suspension arms however, are the same. So if you interchange the lot between balljoint and trunion, you will be able to drive with bigger brakes (stronger bearings?). These parts have been more difficult to come by because they are sort after.

micky1mo - At this rate, you will have finished three cars before I have finished one!

Any more photos / progress to report on your G46 and Navigator builds?

Good luck, Paul. :)

I have a nice warm workshop with a ramp so I'm not held to ransom but the weather like yourself.

The G-46 is just waiting for the decals for Andy which are soon to be done :whoo: Then I need to re-fit the doors and boot lid :eusa_wall:.

The Navigator has had engine problems, spent today fitting new piston rings as the old ones had sized through standing to long. Once running I'll get on with it, as the workshop is very slow for the next few weeks :(

As I said earlier the tank I used was from a VW beetle, it has a return and the take off is on the bottom this was able to take a 15mm feed line for the high pressure pump.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psa530a418.jpg

The high pressure pump simply bolts to the cage frame with a re-used exhaust clamp

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psf1ef1241.jpg

The upper rear part of the cage frame has reinforced as this will take the seat belts and give me some where to "bolt-on" my body.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psba134a4b.jpg

The front of the cage frame also has some extra bracing to support the steering column and again give me some where extra to "bolt-on" my body

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps42dc827f.jpg

I have also fitted a set of MGF wheels £70 of E-Bay :high5: . They fit with no spacers but are very close to the rear tie bar (had to remove the wheel balance weight). I also had to get the wheel nuts made-up.

I will be setting up the body tub and bonnet over the next few days. :bounce:

Here are a few photos of the rear anti-roll bar or wheel bracing bar fitted to my axle.
I have never seen one before but it does seem to work :icon_biggrin:

That's a possibility :lie: :lie:

My target is at least to fire it up soon and drive it by then. :flame:

That camber compensator/arb looks interesting. It looks to me like it's designed to prevent the dreaded wheel tuck when shifting the weight from one side to the other at speed.

Because of the lighter weight of these cars that isn't actually a problem, but you could try it with and without and see if there's any difference.

Good luck getting the car moving under its own steam, make sure to post a video of it running...

adventuresoftimtim 17th January 2014 20:26

Yeah the camber compensator bar does look good, will it prevent a lot of the suspension movement as well giving you a very firm ride? Good for handling i guess :)

That's interesting that you haven't experienced any tuck under Mr T, the problem was also there on the early spitfires, but i imagine the re-body makes the herald even lighter.

Mister Towed 17th January 2014 21:24

With only 250kgs over the back axle suspension travel isn't an issue even with four leaves taken out of the rear spring. You might find traction a bit of an issue with a more powerful engine though...

It's this lack of traction that I am hopping will act as a safty valve ie; spin the wheels rather than blow the diff :icon_biggrin:

Got the body in place and roughly fitted the bonnet.
The BMW engine sits well back so the power bulge will be small, the other hole are for the dizzy cap and the radiator corners.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps316917fe.jpg

I was going to make a few humps to cover the "sticky-out" bits but found this on the shelf.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psed337a1b.jpg

I think it looks the part, better than a scoop or bulge.

Looking at the two I think the Navigator bonnet has a lot more room underneath it and with hind-sight would have been the better bonnet to use on this project as I think it would have covered the whole engine with no cut-outs.
There may even be enough room under a Navigators bonnet for a V8. :eusa_think: :eusa_think: (the next project looms) :eusa_think: :eusa_think:

micky1mo 19th January 2014 17:44

Forgot to say it will be running by the end of the week :eusa_liar: Promise

Paul L 20th January 2014 17:53

That BMW engine fits pretty well, all things considering.

I must confess that after seeing Mister Towed's bonnet, I think 4 mini scoops would look better than 1 big one.

But what do I know? :icon_wink:

Good luck, Paul. :)

When I finally get to the stage of fitting my bonnet, I hope that means less work for me.

If you do a search Micky , you will see another Mick has kind of beaten you to it on the V8 Navigator / Cordite front.

Mikmiglia started building a V8 Cordite back when still involved with Sammio factory.

This build looks interesting. I agree with the several smaller bulges comment , btw. but its your car , your choices.

EL PRIMER 21st January 2014 09:46

The flexibility of these little bodies still amazes me. They are just great for producing a true 'special'
I think some people in the kit car industry pull faces at their single skin design. many manufacturers choosing to create more complete shells with inner structures etc. but it is the simplicity of these cars that makes them so easily adaptable and , for me , keeps them interesting and appealing.
