Well hello all, once again.
After abandoning my Ribble Pilot late last year, I have decide that having the Vitesse Chassis, Engine and all the new running gear just sat in my workshops, is just a waste.
So I am putting some of Land Rover Projects (seven of them) on hold, and getting ready to make a fresh start on a Miglia Speedster.
micky1mo seems to have got a lot further with my previous Ribble bodywork, than I was ever going to.
I have had the all the out riggers, rails and the extension arms replaced on the chassis, and it is getting shotblasted this week, so painting then building will commence mid March when I am back in the UK.
More stupid questions will follow........
Please also check out my build site www.mikestoys.co.uk
My Build Spec Will Be As Follows (Changes May Occur During Build)
Vitesse Based MKII Rotoflex
2-Litre 6-Cylinder
4-Speed with Overdrive 3rd/4th
Miglia Speedster Body in Rossi Red
Chassis in Off White / Cream
Interior in Tan / Land Rover Series Deluxe Seats (Re-Upholstered)
Wheels at Present will be Spun Disc Wheel Covers (but this may be changed to Wires!!)
Electrics Complete New Loom
Dash (GPS Speedo / Analogue Electronic Gauges)

Thinking about the colour the car.
I am going to go with Bright Red (Rosso), looking for inspirational colour combinations, I found this beauty a 1949 Roselli Colli (poss Fiat) http://www.cristianoluzzago.it/cars-inventory/144-roselli-colli/168-roselli-colli.html#, have never heard of these before.
So,
Bodywork - Red

Cockpit - Silver (pos) with Tan Seats or all tan interior as this Fiat Barchetta

Wheels - Haven't decided wires or standard with disc covers caps
Just not sure what colour to do the chassis and frame - black or silver or white.
Thoughts please.

I like the idea of white... are you brave enough? I love the tan interior and covered dash. I suppose wires are the way to go, even though i'm keeping steels.

I am wanting to go with white for the chassis and frame, I think with the tan and red paint work it will work, just can't 100% convenience myself.
For the wheel I was thinking of trying the a set of moon (metal spun) wheel trims, see what they are like, if I don't like them then I will go with wires.
On another note do you know if it is legal to use GPS speedo in the UK, also I am think of using a SpeedHut gauges.

White chassis with red paint will look very period imho. Go for it!
I like the idea of moon discs coupled with narrow tyres, very Bonneville salt flats speed trials. Go for it!
The construction and use regulations require road vehicles to have a speedometer that's visible and well maintained, but there's no mention of whether it needs to be mechanical or can use the GPS system. This means that legally you'll be fine with a GPS speedo, it just won't look very fifites. Erm, go for it if that's your bag.
There's further legislation regarding accuracy - it should never show a lower than true speed and must not read more than 110% + 6.25mph of actual speed, but I've never known anybody actually check that. It shouldn't be an issue with a GPS speedo anyway - in my experience of doing speed checks on patrol cars using a laser speed gun the sat nav's speed reading has always been dead on while the in car speedo typically reads at least 10% high and gets more inaccurate the faster you go (showing 66 at an actual 60mph, 115 at a true 100mph etc).
Just remember that if anyone ever decides to check your GPS speedo accuracy they won't be able to do it on a rolling road...

Thanks T for the advise.
This is the gauges I am thinking of using, I think they look quite period, also think of a pair for my 1962 Land Rover.

Not seen those before, they do look pretty good. What size are they?
Oh, and that speedo would only be legal fitment on a pre 1984 donor as it doesn't also read in kph.

Hi again, Not used one of these specific looms. We use the Langy's (Rebel) 8 Circuit looms (http://www.langysrodshop.co.uk/wiring_kits.htm) and can vouch for them (They also do looms for 9+3 and 20 circuits) . They will be standard fit on all our turnkeys rather than battling 30+ year old Triumph looms.
As well as being colour coded, they have the feed printed on them every 6 inches! (e.g. Left HL Main Beam, Right HL Dip Beam)

mas123mas - Good luck with the Miglia build.
There are some wheels with disc covers in the latest Ribble News photos, and I really like that look.
( My Spitfire donor came with new alloy wheels & tyres, so I'm using them. )
Good luck, Paul. :)
PS
Have you read Mac/Viatron's build thread?
He has fitted some sort of new wiring loom ( I think it might be the one Andy is talking about).
I'm also pretty sure he is fitting the same, or very similar, gauges too.

Cheers Andy, Have you a copy of the wiring diagram, and how long are the wires in the loom, the kit I was looking at the just the fuse box, no wiring!!! so this seems a better option (might also use on the Land Rover depending on the wire length).

Just finalising the Logo before ordering the gauges.
I looked at the CBS module but the loom from Langy's was not much more and included all the wiring, I haven't installed my loom yet but all the spurs look to be long enough.

Thanks, emailed Langy's and they said "these kits are universal so will be fine for a 22ft Cadillac so you won't have any problems."
I am going to order two 20 circuit one's, I know this is an over kill, but at least I have over capacity for future idea's.
I am putting heated seats, electric fan, fuel pump, radio/aux chargers etc....
I've requested a copy of the wiring diagram, so I can plan a few more bits in detail, just wait for a response. If they are as good as they look I will get a few more for my other Land Rovers as these are 1/4 the price of just the wiring looms.

The FAQ says that the front Left and Right looms are 15 and 18 feet respectively and the rear are 18 and 24 feet so there shouldn't be any problem with any of your projects.

Why not try a set of MGF alloys, I'v fitted a set to your old Pilot and I recon they really suit the car.

As a matter of interest and taking into mind that I am still shopping about for my project.
I know from reading this forum that over a hundred Sammios are out there in various guises , but how many Miglias are in circulation?
I assume not many Spitfire examples as these are new but the Miglia Speedster has been around for over a year now , so I assume there are quite a few about.
I have found a couple on here being built but only 2 cars regularly come up on my search engine , the red one in Germany and the green one ( broken up and dismantled - I believe )
Any one who reads this forum but not a poster on here got any pictures to share ?

mas123 - I believe Mike used Classic Mini external door handles on the earlier kits.

I bought a set for my Cordite, that I no longer need, if you are interested.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p306/TT_Paul_L/DSCF7238.jpg
I also have a pair of very basic door latches.

NOTE:
I'm sure Mike is working on some changes to the door design, so it is still worth checking with him.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
PJ Grabowski - As far as I know, Mike is the only one who has finished a Speedster kit.
But this is what he does for a living, so it is a full time job for him.
For everyone else, we try to build our kits in whatever "spare" time we have.
I think tlrtone has got the furthest of the "home builders" that post on here.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4127
Not many people have completed a kit in less than a year, although it is possible.
In fairness to Miglia, we are still waiting for the first Sammio Cordite/ Ribble Navigator or G-46 kits to be finished as well.
( Although Micky1mo's G-46 is very close to being finished. )
Sorry, got to go. I'm supposed to be doing something else! :juggle:
Hope that helps, Paul. :)

There seem to a lot of people who are not posting, as Sammios (now Ribbles) have popped up on eBay and YouTube from time to time.
I purchased a Ribble Pilot, then decide to sell the shell and frame, due to work commits, then last week decided to order a Miglia, as I have opt'ed for the two humps to be installed prior to it been delivered as I am not patient enough to carry out the body work fettling. Styling is very similar but with the Miglia I like the idea of the driving position been set back a bit further.

The car also includes a spare 1998cc Engine included, head converted for running on Unleaded fuel. Various other spares included such as steering rack and carburettors. Plus the roller trolley that I can use for my Miglia Build, just have to store the car for a later date in Lock Up, which is now starting to get over filled.

Looking good , nice to see that your doing a nice job of restoring the chassis prior body fitment.
You should get good money for your bonnet if in good condition . I think Gary got £200 to £300 for his if i remember . Did you manage to source a gearbox ok ?

I give most the parts away to people that where restoring Triumph Vitesse and Heralds as I felt that guilty about destroying it, even though it was rotten.
With regards the gearbox I purchase another complete, but dismantled Triumph Vitesse, as this was the cheapest option, with needing the Overdrive, propshaft, switches etc. But I will look at restoring this in the future or it can be a base for another kit (possible). I have bought it unseen but the guy has owned the car for year then 5 years ago took it off the road for restoration, so I felt it was worth the gamble.

Though please on the follow:-
Cooling
I am thinking of fitting a Mazda MX5 radiator and twin fan system, has anyone done this or have any thoughts on the fitting.

Exhaust
Motorbike twin megaphone exhaust, road legal (but not sure if it will be too loud), but it should be a good engine tone.

Spare Wheel Storage
Think of using a spare wheel carrier like I had on my old Mitsubishi L200

I like the spare wheel carrier, but given all the cooling problems i had with the Lambo, i have to ask if you've calculated the volume of that MX5 rad to make sure that that it's at least the same as oem?
If you don't already have a rad then have a look on e-bay at the aluminium racing rads coming in from China. I'm sure you can get one of the right volume and they are dirt cheap nowadays!

Would possibly be able to use Austin / Rover Mini boot hinges, just want the boot be enough for a overnight bag and a picnic hamper.
Will have to consider moving the petrol tank to behind the drivers seat, will have to have a look at the Rotoflex set up in case the tanks fouls this area.
Can't wait to get home and start this build.

Viatron, I know my Mrs would kill me if she every found out how much I spend on my "Toys" as she call them, I initially tried to do this on a budget (this is now a chequebook build, which I know goes against the original idea of "kit cars"), but my budget was blown on the first page, so I then thought I might as well get all the parts I want, in one go, then I only have one bill to hide, plus I am building three 1960's Land Rovers (a 3.5 V8 Auto, 3.9 V8 Manual and 300TDI), so I have been looking at parts that are interchangeable (the gauges, the wiring loom, the lights, seats etc) to try and keep the cost down by buying multiplies, also I can trial fit parts between cars, to ensure the style fits what I want.
I wanted to use a logo, but because this may not stay on this car, it may only be a trial fit I thought I would forget about the logo.
I want there to similarities between the Miglia styling and Land Rovers that I am building, this will not be apparent straight away, but as my builds progress you will see (hopefully if I can make all my ideas reality).

I am too, as there just ideas floating around in my head at the moment. The real building start in about in a week and a half. Collecting the kit on Monday 17th March.
Would like a boot space and the wheel underneath, but need to look at the exhaust routing also I need consider the mounting of the petrol tank and the filling point, but I won't know until I collect the frame and the body.
I like the idea of a hard top it was something I though about, but it more electrics as you will need windscreen wipers and washers, so I put that thought out my head. Although it will be nice to see what Mike comes up with.

Tron, think that might be what I heard being discussed. We had a guy come in with a Cobra and he was talking to our guy that does the Lambo's, Ferrari's etc. and they were discussing GPS speedos. Yet again you could (will) be right. just didn't want all the effort to be wasted at the last hurdle. "Many a great idea ruined by bureaucracy"

I actually forgot to mention about the floor pans, and unfortunately I can't find the email with the costs, mikmiglia made them for me, as these are lower that the other set of steel pans I have from my Sammio/Ribble Pilot kit. So once I have the body in position, I will be test fitting both to see with fits me the best.
I am sure mikmiglia will be able to help and advise on the costing's for the lower pans, these are GRP strengthen with plywood (but I can't remember the construction details).
This is the list of parts I purchased when I bought my kit.
Kit contents
•One piece Miglia Speedster body
•Bulkhead
•300mm deep dashboard blank moulded into body
•Tear drop vent bonnet
•Double skinned doors
•Perspex windscreen
•Windscreen frame
•Steel subframe
Extras
•Twin Humps
•Lower floors pans
•Chrome air vent rings
•Gearbox Linkage (is there a difference between non-OD and OD)
•Beer crate grille

Thanks Mas, nice. I'm not keen on plywood anywhere (i dunno, i just don't like the idea) but i'll message Mike and see. current plan is to have (in one peice per side - the front bit would not be sunken) 2mm ali laser cut to the "net" plan and machine folded like origami to the shape, resulting in only about 500-600mm of total weld distance. The weight would be about 7kg per side, and the seats would sit on steel "straps" that would spread the strain and carry most of the weight to the chassis rails.
that will cost me estimated $300AUD per side, but getting the initial drawings done onto a computer that the CNC cutter will read including bending and weld gap allowance is likely to be on top of that. If successful, I may sell the computer cnc ready plans for a small fee (attempting some recovery of the prototyping costs!).

Right, this time back in the UK, I am going give my self a kick up arse and pull my finger out and get the Miglia started. I have ask my friend who is a Land Rover Specialist to re-commission my 1981 Range Rover 2-Door, so that is one big job I don't have time to do.
Job .1.
Weld the small holes found after shotblasting
Re-Shot Blast welded parts (now I have a container with shotblast equipment)
Prime the chassis and frame separately
Paint with MIPA Stone Chip Underseal, Over Paintable (the chassis and frame separately)
Paint chassis with the Limestone Enamel (the chassis and frame separately)
Job .2-3.
Finish blasting steering and suspension components
Paint steering and suspension bit where needed
Start the build, my aim in the next 6 weeks is to have a rolling chassis
Job .2-3.
Possible, if have the engine and gearbox rebuilt, if I get time.

Clamshell front and rear would make access for maintenance much easier.
I've been very grateful for my fully opening bonnet (engine out to replace clutch; cam changed with motor in situ; radiator removed/replaced at least a dozen times; etc; etc), and I could've done with a clamshell back end for better access to the rear spring, which I've also messed with at least three times.
If I built another it'd have clamshells both ends.

I am hoping they can take the weight of the chassis and suspension etc.... (no engine or gearbox.
Plan is to build the rolling chassis then mount engine when the chassis is on the ground.
They were on £29.99 including delivery, the advert said 200kg each trestle.
Might even try to mount the engine and see if they are strong enough. :fear:

Well, let's see :-) I bought 3 from Aldi this week that suggest 200kg each, so that should be more than enough. I plan to take the body off while I sort the mechanicals, then reunite them back together again on teh floor. But for doing the mechanicals these trestles seem a good idea.

Will take a chance, I have order some Firenze Red, enough to paint one of my Land Rovers and the body work of the Miglia, so I will have matching tow car.
Land Rover will be ready considerable quicker than the Miglia (as I have paid someone to get some of my projects finished).
One Land Rover (out off 12) and one of Range Rover 2-Doors (out of 3 (was 5)) should be complete by the time I get back from Vietnam. I have also had a clear out this time home (sold a Land Rover and a two of my Range Rovers), also thinking of sell a complete Triumph Vitesse MK2, that I have still not had time to collect from Nottingham, would have loved to had this as well, but time in the UK and family things are getting in the way of me playing with my toys.:juggle:
