View Full Version : Air pressure

Daft question time. Im going to hopefully put the paint on the car tomorrow. What air pressure (at the gun) do you guys use. I know there is a happy medium between orange peel and masses of overspray. Kind regards. Dave.

50 at the gun. Please bear in mind I don't know. What I am talking about!!
Good luck!
Its never the last coat, until its the last coat!

I take it that you're painting cellulose?
I tried a few different guns and got the best results on my setup with a cheap suction feed gun from screw fix! I found that the best way to set the pressure was through trial and error by painting a test piece (back of garage door!) first!

The one thing that made a massive difference for me was when I added an external pressure regulator and moisture trap.

Good luck!

Car sprayed. As i thought, black shows every tiny mark. Have some rubbing down now with 2000 grit and then a good polish with G6 and G3 paste. Any ideas how long i should leave the paint go off before attacking it with wet an dry?

landmannnn
23rd April 2013, 20:20
It depends on the ambient temperature and how many coats of paint you applied. Six months would be ideal, but nobody can wait that long!
Four weeks is about right.

Dave Lowes
23rd April 2013, 20:49
Is that even with cellulose?

landmannnn
23rd April 2013, 20:58
Yea, celly never really dries which is why it is a really good paint for cars, it stays flexible.;

The car is all one colour at last. Just have to wait for the paint to harden now before i can colour sand it. http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b568/davelowes/0A3285CD-7C7D-43B3-88CA-5C986DDE1B8C-24863-00000745FDA1D556_zps4de40434.jpghttp://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b568/davelowes/0A3285CD-7C7D-43B3-88CA-5C986DDE1B8C-24863-00000745FDA1D556_zps4de40434.jpg

Inside that metal shed in this weather you probably only need to leave it a couple of days before polishing.
If you bad mixed the last coat just right it would have come up more shiney, not to criticise, I can only get it right by luck....

I quite enjoy the last bit, flattening with 2000 and cutting compound to bring out the hidden shine.

Dave Lowes
25th April 2013, 18:11
Yeah its quite rewarding. Not very easy to spray in such a small area so i always knew there would be more work to do once the paint was on. Black does show every imperfection but i really wanted it that colour.

Dave Lowes

Despite the lovely orange peel affect i feel the black sets the wheels off nicely. When i can get it out of the garage i will take some more pictures stood further back :)http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b568/davelowes/E8063A7A-E740-4D00-805B-5D8DC342FBF8-25281-0000075B09928B22_zpsf08d9019.jpg

i too like the black but keep swinging back to sticking with BRG from the donor... only time will tell.....

Dave Lowes
26th April 2013, 16:47
You cant have a ferrari tribute in BRG. Thats like dressing father Christmas in yellow :)

Hammy
26th April 2013, 17:26
my absolute reason for BRG is to keep it a tribute to the 60s world famous cars and not Italy. each to their own but I will never try to create a replicar. still dont know what colour it will be but..... Jag, cobra daytona, gto and maserati are all in my build. there will be different rear lights different vents etc etc. Its a tribute to the 60s for me with a couple of twists.....

Dave Lowes
26th April 2013, 19:59
Top answer. I love the way that everyone has gone their own way with builds. I was stuck for colours too. Its a big decision. Good luck choosing.

Interested to know what the rest of you have put in the recess on the front. I have gone for these grilles. I ordered 2 of them not realising they came as a pair so i have two spare. Not sure if i should put them in the bonnet as in my picture or not. Also i think the headlight covers look great, even if it is cracked (sorry Chris). Looking forward to the show on Sunday. http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b568/davelowes/F48EFB4F-F784-40D8-AEE1-AF86664A0F33-13108-000003BF339A99A6_zpsf890d2ca.jpg http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b568/davelowes/2D27169D-DAB1-4CD6-B626-F5E9414704B7-13108-000003BEC43183B9_zpsec25a2f0.jpg http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b568/davelowes/5B047931-FF98-43CF-9A77-64D9D99D1FF7-13108-000003BEDB9BE0D1_zps3544a023.jpg

Dave, I would'nt put them on the bonnet. Just sell them. How do you secure headlight covers?

Dave Lowes
3rd May 2013, 09:03
The covers will be screwed on using some nice chrome screws all the way around the edge. I wanted some rims to go around the outside but because of the complexity of the curves they are a nightmare to produce. The cover at the moment is taped on as it is cracked as a result of driving over it:(

Dave Lowes
9th May 2013, 20:57
It looks worse than it is. I cut away quite a lot inside the arch area from the original rear wings. The tyre sits inside the new arch. The picture looks like the wheel is closer to the edge than it is. Plus ive hardened the suspension up so there is not much movement :)

What tail lights are these from?

Where I can get such rings for our Land Rover lights?
A source where I can buy that would make me happy.

How difficult was the interior? Did you just stretch the leather over what was already there or did you add a foam layer? What did you use to fix the leather? Any tips on avoiding wrinkles in the corner?

To be honest its been a nightmare. I stretched the material over the existing dash and glued it in place with contact adhesive. Its been a bit of a job. On the edges ive warmed the material with a hair dryer to make it more pliable. Im sure it will be worth it in the end:)

Hello everyone. Seems like ages since I've been on here. I've been enjoying driving the car for the latter part of the summer. Hoping to drive it to the NEC next month for the classic car show. I've been busy repairing what the knucklehead in my garage did. When I took the car for mot he managed to squeeze the front end over the sliding jack on the ramp. Hence reversing off led to a horrendous cracking and ripping noise, my two headlight covers snapping and flying off and a lovely crack right down the front end along the bottom of the bonnet. Be warned at mot time, these cars are quite low to the ground. (Especially when you've lowered it:)

I got mine from eBay but it was a complete kit that I had to cut to length myself. I will try and find it and post a link. It was straight through but it was way too loud. So I got myself a small muffler and put it just after the cat. Still sounds lovely, burbles and pops.

Dave Lowes
29th October 2013, 21:29
I think I paid the price on the listing. It took some jiggling to fit but looks good. When I say its loud i mean painfully ear bleedingly loud to the point I couldn't take it above 3000 rpm. With a small muffler in line it's still loud but much better. It's suprising the sound you can get out of a 1.6 engine :)

I know the feeling, my last kit car was a Ferrari 360 replica and that was just the 1.8vvti engine, with a straight through, no back box, no muffler and not even a cat in sight!....
