I wonder how along the previous owner spent polishing it! Did you tell him what you were going to do? I didn't have the heart to tell the bloke I bought mine off.

I gave it a quick wash before I took the pics so I can use them for when I break it and sell the parts!

The Mk2 alloys are already on Ebay!

Just sent the email then Chris.

Its Green Hammy.

Ive been looking at these kits for a little while but never seen a GTO replica or even a real 1 for that matter and randomly bumped into a bloke with a Porsche GTO kit yesterday! Took some pics....

Just had a few hours on the interior before I get my kit.

Took the seats out and cut the head rests off and dropped them in to get re-upholstered. I found an image on google and digitized it for the embroidery company for the Ferr@ri horse to be stitched into the top.

http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/y408/Danny_HUFC/null_zps07b6abea.jpg (http://s1273.photobucket.com/user/Danny_HUFC/media/null_zps07b6abea.jpg.html)

Im going to Germany on tues for a couple of weeks work so they should be done by the time I'm home!

Stripped out the center console to smooth it in to get it a little away from the MX5 look...

http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/y408/Danny_HUFC/null_zpsb0a3d57f.jpg (http://s1273.photobucket.com/user/Danny_HUFC/media/null_zpsb0a3d57f.jpg.html)

Also sent my chrome door sills away to get sand blasted and get the Ferr@ri logo etched in instead of 'Roadster'!

Interested what you are up to with the interior as I have only added chrome and wood effect plastic to mine, and I was keeping the seats the same.

Does that steering wheel have an airbag? If so, is it a standard Mazda item?

Danny_HUFC
11th May 2013, 08:01
No airbag im afraid, it came with the car so not sure of its origin.
Il just have to do sum carefull driving with no aribags just like I have to in my run about car..... http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/y408/Danny_HUFC/null_zps5194b8f1.jpg
No seatbelts in that either and with a full fibreglass body I dont stand much of a chance in a crash!

Danny_HUFC
13th May 2013, 14:26
Test piece for the embroidery on the seats worked out pretty well, its going to be smaller and in dark brown stitching to match the tan seats... http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/y408/Danny_HUFC/null_zps63f552b3.jpg
If an one wants the digitised image I can send you it via email to get round this copyright law. (This is not a ferrari horse but a donkey) ;)

It was built by William"Billy" McGlochlin at great speed, it was posted on here but the pictures have now gone, it keeps popping up on ebay. Check early Tribute threads for Billys posts.

So I've bought my alloys! There will be a few boxes waiting at home for me when I get back from Germany!

http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/y408/Danny_HUFC/alloys_zps2bdc6d24.jpg (http://s1273.photobucket.com/user/Danny_HUFC/media/alloys_zps2bdc6d24.jpg.html)

They are 14" & Width 6.5J

Can any 1 recommend tyre sizes for the unmodified arches on the MX250 kit?

thanks

I'm looking at making some new dials with the Ferrari logo on (I can design them however any 1 wants on a program for printing).

Once they are designed I can have them digitally printed and cut onto vinyl by my pal who has a sign writing business.

Transfer these onto some thin clear plastic and job done! (these can have a layer of 'light blocker' put in between the vinyl and the plastic as well so everything lights up as it should, including the logo!)

I'm going for the horse on the rev counter and '250 GTO' text on the speedo.

Let me know if any one wants any doing as I could do the Tribute logo etc and the cost would be next to nothing!

Danny_HUFC
22nd May 2013, 13:32
I contacted Lockwood dials about making some custom MX5 dials and had a reply with the price (in case making my own is too difficult!)...

For a 1 off custom set the price is £220 +VAT however if 5 or more are ordered then the price is reduced dramatically to £62 +VAT.

I'l have a goo at making them myself when I get home from Germany but if that fails will any one be interested in ordering a set with the Ferrari logos?

Cheers

Looks like I wont have much time to complete my car in time for the meet on 29th so looking for a little help so I can have all the parts waiting for me that I will need to complete.

Does any 1 have a supplier for;

headlamps
side lights
Front indicators (the 1s that locate just above the side lights on the genuine)
rear lights ie the closest to the original GTO as poss
Fuel cap

and most importantly a genuine front grill?

any help appreciated

I have been looking at side repeaters too. I want something small and reasonably stylish rather than a big square or circle.

There are a few BMW ones that look okay. 3 series coupe. E46 model I think and have seen these for half the price of yours. Probably do them with orange glass too.

Something I noticed the other day, the side repeaters on the new Megan, if you fit them upside down, might work. I was thinking of putting them up on the front end of the front wing.

Mine is a MK 2 Mondeo ST mesh coupled with a Mondeo MK 2 chrome surround and a horse badge from Ebay, or you could try chicken wire, chris posted this on my build, its a genuine GTO.

no problem,
cut out a piece and welded the new grill. Then you can paint the new Grill after filling and sanding.

Some genuine ones had no grill, (Gulf racing) as other kits (above) or you could make a slatted grill and polish it as Billy did with his its a shame there are no pictures on his build.

think this is going to be my only option, I'm home soon so I can start to have a play about with it. I may have to trim the sides down as well to get rid of the 'over oval' part if you know what I mean!

How much to get the wheels powder coated?

I have a set of poorly painted wires that I would like to have stripped and powder coated either black or titanium grey.

I would like them stripped back and made good but a LARGE bill on my modern has delayed that idea. Still interested in what you paid. PM me if you don't want the wife to see ;-)

Danny_HUFC
16th August 2013, 07:25
Haha these where a tad rusty when i got them but i had them sand blasted, primed and chrome powdercoated for £150 for all 4. The finish is perfect, i cant fault them. Had them done at RS alloy refurbs in Hartlepool.

Hi, I had the same problem fitting the genuine wheels they were 5x108 and the Mx5 is 4x100 PCD, if you go back through my build I had split adapters mas in the US, I used a company called 42 Draft Designs not that expensive either

Danny_HUFC

Cheers for that, no drawings but if you measure the distance between the centre of the holes on your wire wheels thats the PCDx5 the mazda is 100x4 this was all the company needed, I alsobought spigot ring adaptors from ebay 54.1 to 57.1 for the centres these were from the uk for about £10, got taxed £40 on the import from the Us but still cheap!

I had the kit delivered and thats how it arrived as it was resting on the rear lip during transport, I need to speak to chris about it as the fiber glass doesnt go all the way into the lip so there is a void between the gel coat and the fiber glass, will make it brittle so may have to get my body shop guy to re-do the full lip. Im using colourtechs workshop to do my work and they are going to finish it off for me so it shouldnd be too difficult for them (they built Andys ford RS for him that tribute made the moalds from).

Yes, you need a rubber, think there are 1 or 2 piece types - the one piece type is preferable.

If you search on google you can get them new - not cheap, £50+

You would have to search french sites - joint de lunette arriere (sorry, no accent grave on my keyboard).

You would be best finding someone breaking one.

I was thinking about getting a lexan r/s and bonding it, screen is only £45. Went glass in the end.

Surely if you bond/blend the front wings to the sills then you can't take the front end off?

Hi Danny, if you blend this in you will not be able to unbolt and remover the front end section of the bodywork if you need to change the windscreen.

Danny_HUFC
16th October 2013, 16:49
ahh right, that will be fine for mine because i cut the front back and used the original black plastic trim under the windscreen and bonded to that so i can change the windscreen if needed! il blend it it in.

Also them headlight covers arived! the postman kindly posted the card through next door for them to collect them from the post office!

After a nice 2 weeks in Florida, I'l be home early hours Tuesday morning so hopefully picking my car up from paint 9am sharp! I'm only spending a week in lovely England before I head off again so hopefully enough time to make my exhaust, fit my badges, fit mesh, fit my alloys (if my spacers/hub adapters are done!) and a few other bits and bobs on the exterior. I have something similar fitted. After loads of trial fits all over the car they were completely useless anywhere I mounted them on the body, so I ended up making some alloy towers for them to sit on.

I now have some view to the side/rear, but the real issue is that they're just a bit small compared to what's provided by modern manufacturers these days. You wouldn't want a fecking great big door mirror on your 250 though, would you...

WorldClassAccident
26th November 2013, 13:38
Sounds similar to what I had with my hub adaptors. I managed to get the head of the bolt shaved by a few mm and it fitted.

About halfway down this page : http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4253&page=10

I had about 10mm of bolt head and 10mm of angled shaft so 2-3mm removed didn't weaken the bolts

Will do, im picking it up tomorow from the garage after geting it insured today. £168 fully comp with adrian flux. not bad at all!. ive never really seen insurance under a grand yet with a the cars ive had and bein under 25. turned 25 last month so can now officially have 'kit car insurance'!

as reguards to interior, ive stripped my center console section out and plan on cutting the gear stick as low as possible, drilling and tapping it and putting a nice long and thin rod in with a gear nob on top and geting a chrome 'H' gate mate up.

ive striped all the heating and aircon controlls etc out and just have the dial switch that puts on hot air onto the windscreen and foot well.

the air vents on the dash will be fibreglassed in and ive relocated my cd player in the glove box. il b messing about with it over the next few weeks but ive just moved house this weekend and my new house doesnt have a garage! school boy error realy!

Hmm are 'racing numbers' legal on the road - or do that have to have a 'strike through'?

WorldClassAccident
6th December 2013, 18:49
I thought it was the race organisation that banned its members from displaying their race numbers when not competing rather than plod. In the olden days the local plod were normally involved in helping events so they nicked people with numbers to be safe.

The idea was that if a racer committed an offence on the road they would be penalised in the event but Joe Public would be left alone, If Joe Public had race numbers showing when they got nicked then some poor random on the competition might get penalised.

Sort of an urban myth about being illegal as I understand but perhaps MrTowed (our friendly traffic plod) can clarify

Paul L
6th December 2013, 19:06
The racing numbers thing was actually covered half way down Mister Towed's "On the road" thread here.

Just one thought about this statement...

... going to mount it on the rear shelf along with the window buttons, heating controls and hazzards ...

Would turning the hazzards on while on the move (e.g. running into stationary traffic on the motorway) be a bit tricky if you have to look/reach behind you for the switch?

If the 'stub' thats left is easy to remove, i'd take it off, slice it in half, get some steel tubing thats a tight fit, cut to length, tap both halves into the tube a fair way, then seam weld both ends back. A stunning looking car Danny! Really nice.

Have you considered making a gear gate out of thick alumnium?

That would be a lot of work but I should think worth the resulting end product.

Mainly a conversation with the wife about me having too many cars! but we are re-locating to spain so im looking for a LHD either z3 or z4 to do a tribute kobra conversion on but for some reason a LHD in the Uk seem to be a fortune! left hookers used to be cheaper because no one wanted them but now it seems like you can sell them for twice what they are worth!

landmannnn

Spain sounds great.

UK second hand cars are really cheap so there is a big market exporting 10 to 15 year old cars, quite a recent change.

Just got to finish the stainless 'H' gate.
Add a door handle/leather strap to pull to close the doors.

The little carpet flap in between the back of the seats hides the CD player and heating controls (its set to windscreen and feet as I've covered the front facing vents up.

I Like it Danny, clever idea about hiding the CD and heater controls. Can I ask did they make a panel for the headling or is it mounted directly onto the fibreglass?

I'm not sure as I haven't seen the car in person yet as I'm still away, I was just sent the pics. I think it's just bonded straight onto the fibre glass.

Ian, the square 1s at the bottom are just reflectors. my fog light is hidden out the way, mounted just underneith on a hinge, it got hinged down for the MOT and hinged up ever since! I never botherd with a reverse light either as its not an MOT requirement.

Yeah I still have it, going to advertise it for sale at the start of the Summer. When I picked my kobra up from Chris, he gave me a genuine Ferrari H gate that suprisingly worked for the MX5! Im back in the UK for a few days in January so will try and get it sorted out then.
