I thought I would start a new thread, as I am amassing lots of pictures of the donor herald and strip down and haven't got round to building a website like my last one (www.mysammiospyder.co.uk)
This is the sorry donor, bought from ebay for £205 as a part finished restoration!
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/2013-02-16/2013-02-16%2010.47.09.jpg
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/2013-02-16/2013-02-16%2010.47.02.jpg
The nice thing about it (if there is one..) is that the chassis underwent a rebuild so everything was new - but that was about 6 years ago, and it was stood since then...
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/2013-02-17/2013-02-16%2012.21.13.jpg
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/2013-02-17/2013-02-16%2012.21.34.jpg
It will need a full strip and rebuild again, but has some nice touches like stainless steel brake hoses and a really good chassis that won't need any welding!! :eusa_clap:

the 1300 engine was not in a great condition though and so I have bought an even more sorry 1500 MG Midget engine....
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/2013-02-17/2013-02-16%2015.16.13.jpg
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/2013-02-17/2013-02-16%2015.16.29.jpg
When I started stripping it down, and got rid of all the corroded ancilliaries, the actual block and head were in great condition - I reckon it had a rebuild, with new bearings and piston rings etc only a few thousand miles before it was taken out and stored for 3-4 years...
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/2013-02-23/2013-02-22%2021.08.21.jpg
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/2013-02-23/2013-02-22%2021.08.38.jpg
The mains are 0.010 u/s so it had the crank reground and the big ends are std size. No wear on the crank or bearings so I reckon a spruce up , rebuild and some new bits (distributor, alternator, water pump etc) it should be lovely in the miglia speester.
Temp home for the rebuild pictures is here.... (http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build)

Gary,
this one will be a different colour, just haven't decided yet though...
We be adding in servo brakes on this one (with a BMW E30 pedal assembly) and some other mods here and there.
Aiming for end of May on the road!

When you say, part restored.
Which part? :)

When you say, part restored.
Which part? :)
err, the whole chassis - new everything - but then they parked it up under a tarpaulin for 6 years or so! The rear brake drums and front calipers still had the paper protection and labels on them!
Pity, as it will need a complete stripdown again but at least all the bolts should come off fine! Will repalce the rubber bushes with silicone ones as well while I am at it.
I am going to inspire you to build another "proper" kit car Dave! (only j/k Lambo kit looks cool btw)

Looking forward to seeing your build progress. Are you going to have lowered floors in this one?

:icon_razz: Donor looks like it was great value despite the years spent under a tarp.
Looking forward to seeing your build progress. Are you going to have lowered floors in this one?
yes, the chassis was a good buy, and the bits of body I don't need were sold for the price of it, so it has cost me nothing so far! :icon_razz:
And yes, I will be putting in lowered floors this time, although I am sticking with the same seats (landrover two-part) as they were extremely comfortable and lent themselves very well to hinging forward.
(( The storage behind the seats was a godsend for making the sammio more practical - popping down the shops, storing jackets, picnics etc- and so this one will have a similar mod. ))
I am hoping for good weather this weekend so I can get the chassis stripped for painting next week - another build on the driveway - the wife is soooooo looking forward to arrival of the circus tent again in a few months!
Mike's Miglia kit has a built in bulkhead this time, no more bonding problems around that this time, so I am hoping for a fairly quick build of around 3-4 months - weather and time permitting. Just in time for the scorching summer we are going to have. :target:
Mike has also muted torwards a hard-top option, so I have put my name down as first on the list for one of those!
I won't be adding a stereo and speakers this time - never had it on as it was too noisy anyway, and took away from the enjoyment of listening to the engine.
Summing up my thoughts so far...
Swing spring conversion with 1" spacer block
15" wire wheels (again - silver or black!)
rebuilt 1500cc Midget engine, with standard 13/60 recon gearbox and diff
Landrover seats (hinged backs to access storage behind the seats)
BMW E30 pedal assembly complete with servo and built in clutch m/c
'teardrop' miglia bonnet - not the V8 upside down wheelbarrow :icon_razz:
colour? not sure - quite fancy the Lancia D24 burgundy
The aim is to get it all on the road for this year with the standard engine and drivetrain - they are quick enough - and quite scary at high speeds anyway - not the road holding but the thought of being very exposed in a crash - quite sobering! then next year I want to do one with a V6 or V8 and associated drivetrain and improved chassis.
but as always, plans can change.......

I won't try and keep up with this build... maybe the V6/V8 that should hopefully take a bit longer!:pray2:

Went down to see Mike at Miglia today and saw the first kit roll off the production line.....
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6272.jpg
I didn't fully appreciate the amount of work that has gone into this. The dashboard is actually part of the body ...
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6277.jpg
The door shuts are finished nicely, and the doors are pretty weighty items that should close with a nice thud! Even the bolt holes for early mini door hinges are moulded in so you can't drill then wrong! Nice attention to detail.
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6289.jpg
Another little "feature" is that the frame bolts to the chassis, and then the body is mounted, like the Sammio/Ribble kits, but this time, the body has mounting points so you can't get it misaligned.. nice! :eusa_dance: No more faffing with the bonnet gaps and door gaps this time!
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6299.jpg
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6303.jpg
Also, I didn't appreciate that the front end is significantly longer than the Sammio I built, meaning that the front bumper corners on the chassis won't need to 'fall off', and there is lots of room to put a choice of radiator and mountings in there.
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6305.jpg
And because the body is one piece, the frame comes right to the front and adds additional support. No more bonnet flexing or adding in additional strengthening. I am hoping for a quick build so all this helps a lot, having gone through the long-winded sammio route first time.
Oh, and you get a front bulkhead as well and this is set back from where the original is so you get around 8-10" extra room at the front in the engine bay - ideal for my BMW servo I have planned. The flat bits at the font cover the front outriggers, and is where I will be mounting the battery so it is accessible, but out of the way, again no more worrying about a lowered battery tray!
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6284.jpg
So really impressed with the set up - even the jig for making the frames is a work of art!
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6311.jpg
And here's the next kit underway...(hopefully mine  )
http://www.silo14.co.uk/mymigliaspeedster/build/.Miglia%20Kit%20Photos/IMG_6312.jpg

lots more pictures of the build.
I am aiming to get the engine built this weekend - unless the obligatory Mothering Sunday stuff gets in the way!
Also, since davecymru has mentioned getting up to Stoneleigh, I was going to try for that as a target date, so my rough plan works out like this:
10/3 Engine & gearbox built
17/3 Chassis Stripped
24/3 Chassis Painted & assembled
31/3 engine in and Frame on
7/4 wiring done and body on
14/4 Seats and interior mounted
21/4 Doors hung and body prep started
28/4 Painted
2/5 Interior & exterior fitted and MOT'd
simples! :dizzy:

Hi Gary, i will book it in for two weeks time. So it will be road worthy. Just for further reference they did say they needed the car almost finished.
So body fitted, doors on, engine in but not needed to be run, interia fitted (seats and belts). Its not a bad thing as it needs to be done anyway, but where as before they would let you go down without a bonnet and engine they want to see it further on.

new valves will go in the head this week and hopefully I cna get the engine build in the next few days. That will be that job out of the way then. :eusa_dance:
I have cleaned and painted the gearbox in the same blue - it was reconditioned about a year ago so apart from new mounts, that should do it for that.
Next up is the chassis, but it has started to snow here so I won't be working on that outside for the next couple of days at least! I might have to paint the Spitfire petrol tank I have.
Mike has called me to say my kit will be ready this week, so I better crack on! :flame:

tlrtone
12th March 2013, 22:20
thanks. It is good to be here.... again :biggrin1: :whoo:
Mr T, funnily enough I went to Mike's on Saturday to pick up my frame, but while I was there, I asked if I could 'borrow' his welder to make some mods to it. If you remember from my Sammio build, my little mig welder kept cutting out and as my mum alwasy said - if you don't ask, you don't get! :eusa_dance:
I wanted to move the tank to the rear and put in a luggage space as that was really useful in the Sammio. The end result was that I left my frame there and Mike said he will use that to be the 'standard build' now :icon_cool:
I quite like the idea of being the guinea pig if I can help influence the design to make it better for others in the longer run!
This is the "modified" frame...
829
When I got home I started putting the engine together....
New valves ground in....
832
830
Pistons in with new rings....
831
I am just waiting on the new thrust washers from Rimmers (i'm tightening up the end float from the standard 8-14 thou to around 3-4 thou) and then the crank can get put in and the engine closed up and built.
garyh
13th March 2013, 09:00
You make it look so easy, are you reading how to put engine together or do you just know?
Mister Towed
13th March 2013, 09:01
Looks like good progress so far. Like the fuel tank position, after all, that's where I've put mine.
Engine's also coming along nicely, you do appear to be missing a couple of cylinders though. I'm sure I could only count four, is that right? :peep:
A more serious question now - what's the access going to be like to the engine with a fixed front end?
One of the nice things about Gary's original design imho is the retention of the tilting/removeable front end. This gives superb access for in situ maintenance and future engine/gearbox changes.
I've already taken the engine and gearbox out of mine with the body bonded on (to fix a leaky oil seal) and it was a piece of cake with no bonnet fitted. With the weight of the Vitesse engine and box swinging around I wouldn't be confident about posting it in through an oblong hole between the wings once it's painted. :fear:
Speaking of which, I'd better get out into the garage while there's still some daylight left...
tlrtone
13th March 2013, 10:22
You make it look so easy, are you reading how to put engine together or do you just know?
Gary, I have put together quite a few engines (car & bike) over the years, so they are all a similar process. I have the Triumph Workshop manual and Google to check up on tolerance, guidance and best practice! :icon_cool:
I just love the internet and forums for that sort of thing. Like it is advised by some credible engine builders to reduce the crank endfloat from the standard 8-14 thou to around 3-4 thou.
Engine's also coming along nicely, you do appear to be missing a couple of cylinders though. I'm sure I could only count four, is that right? :peep:
A more serious question now - what's the access going to be like to the engine with a fixed front end?
Yes, Mr T it is only a 4-pot this time - but it is the 1500 MG Midget engine (same as the Spitfire 1500 one), so should go nicely. Although a standard Herald 13/60 gearbox with no overdrive for now. I am considering in future a 5 speed conversion using a Ford Type 9 gearbox and adapter kit from jigsaw racing.....:eusa_dance:
Regarding access, this was a key area I was worried about. I even asked Mike about the possibility of converting it to a flip front!
However, when I was there on Saturday, we had the body on to make sure that the frame mods worked, and actually the bonnet opening is HUGE so there is absolutely no problem with access! the engine will come out with the gearbox attached and not touch the sides! Even a 6-pot will be okay.
One of the things that i didn't appreciate is that the bulkhead is sat about 8-10 inches back and so you get more space around the engine. This does mean that the gear stick needs to be adapted to shift backward - Mike is doing an exchange kit for this!
Hopefully in about 3-4 weeks I will have the rolling chassis and body on so I will take pictures to show you how it all looks in the engine bay.
I think Mike is building a customers car as well at the moment, so he may beat me to it!

Hi guys its the weekend again :eusa_dance:
Well i thought id put up a couple of pics .
I ve been asked for me to build a Miglia speedster for a nice german customer Thomas , i thought before i left work tonight id show how easy it is to fit the body, I had taken me less than an hour from bolting frame down and placing body on .:icon_cool:
The other thing that was asked about , i think mr Towed was how much engine space you had, well this should help. No extra bulges or blisters . This is a 1500 spitfire with the twin carb. Plenty of room for six pot and v8 too.:peace:

Mike the car is a Maserati Berlinetta 1954 so I will check on the colour! Nice blue and probably the one I will go for. Very period looking. :yo:
Anyway, small update as I managed to get some time in between the rain showers this weekend to strip the chassis down, clean it up and get a first coat of chassis black on it in the back garden!
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-03-17 - Chassis/2013-03-17%2017.06.54.jpg
The bits stripped off the chassis were dunked in the parts washer, dried off, and then given a coat of chassis black too. A feeling of deja vu as it was about this time last year I had the same picture for the chassis of my sammio spyder!

Not a lot to update this week.
The weather has been rubbish as we all know, :smow: and so i have been painting all the chassis bits'n'bobs inside this week.
Just the swing spring left now, which I will do tomorrow, and then that's everything pretty much painted and ready to reassemble next weekend.
:eusa_dance:
I will need to order some bits and pieces like brake pads & shoes and the fitting kits this week so I will have them for next weekend. As it is easter, I am aiming to get the chassis rolling, the frame attached and the wiring in. Oh and the pedal assembly/servo mounted.
I did pick up my wheels today. I bought six 15" wires off ebay for £100, and sent four away for blasting and powder coating.
This is the before...
835
I went for the standard silver wheels this time - my last Sammio had black wires. So this is what they are like now... At £35 per wheel, I thought that was a good deal.

Yep, they fit the longer adaptors.

Yes I have delayed my kit as I have no space at home on the drive at the moment.
I am hoping to get the frame home for next weekend so I can get the rolling chassis done, Engine in and the wiring sorted!
Another bonus with delay is that I have agreed with Mike that I will have my body in gel coat coloured so I don't have to paint it straight away.

As you can see I have put a swing spring in and I haven't got my lowering block yet, so that will go in next week. I am going for a 1" block as that was my sammio was with 15" wheels. May need to go more, but I will wait and see. It is relatively easy to get to when it is built up anyway (my sammio took about 4 attempts to get the ride height sorted!)
Anyway, one thing to remember if you are going to convert to a Swing Spring and that is to block up the 2 holes that are not used in the diff as the Swing spring only has 4 bolts and not 6.
I used a standard bolt which I crimped the thread a bit with a hammer. this causes a friction fit with no chance of it undoing and dropping into the diff!

So I'm guessing that since my diff only had 4 holes it must be off a late spitfire or a gt6?
I think anything after '74 had the swing spring as it was made into the standard fitment, so later spits and GT6 would definitely have the four bolt as standard.
The bolts go right through, so if you have the earlier one, the two unused bolt holes act like vents and whilst don't p*ss the diff oil out entirely, will weep a bit and throw some all over the underneath of the car! :dizzy:

30th March 2013, 20:10
I wonder if I slacken of the bolts and squeeze some hylomar blue between the lowering block and diff if that will seal any chance of weeping? cant say I would look forward to accessing the rest of it now all is in place..

If things had gone to plan I may have had the engine and gearbox in, but I was scuppered when I found the clutch wouldn't fit! :ballchain:
The issue was that I am using an MG Midget 1500 engine which has a larger diameter clutch - 7.25" as opposed to the 6.5" on the Herald 1300.
I ordered up the 3-piece clutch kit for the engine only to find out that the centre plate won't fit as it has 20 splines instead of 10. :ranger:
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-03-29%20-%20Build%20up/2013-04-02%2009.00.09.jpg
So some internet searching came up with Rimmers who do a 7.25" centre plate with the 10 spline Herald gearbox centre, so that has now been ordered. Hopefully I will be able to get the engine and box in next weekend, along with the propshaft that I ordered from Spitz Bitz.
Next up with Floorpans, frame, wiring and then I can get onto the body and interior!

Mike turned up with my frame tonight, so I had a chance to quickly try it on for size....
This is a new frame as the one I modified became the standard and was sold as part of another kit! I was happy with that as i wasn't ready at the time anyway.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-06%2016.17.21.jpg
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-06%2016.17.57.jpg
Luckily (?) all the bolt holes lined up apart from the front two, which need a little bit of persuasion from a hammer...
The rear now comes with the petrol tank mount behind the spring, and for transport, it doesn't have the cut out for the petrol filler, so this was the first job to be done...
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-06%2016.17.30.jpg
I purposely asked Mike not to paint the frame as I needed to modify the front end to fit the BMW e30 pedal assembly and servo unit.
After some major scratching of the head and so trial fitmets and cutting of the frame, I eventually ended up with a position that was suitable. However, it needed the steering column to go through the middle of the pedals. At the moment it is all a bt tight, although I think with some welding and modification, the pedal assembly will fit nicely around the column position.

Didn't get the engine in :tsk:
However, I was pleased with progress as I got the pedals and servo mounted and moving freely. Also made up the mounting for the handbrake.
I needed a bit more clearance around the steering column, so I ground out the welds on the clutch pedal and mater cylinder lever, and moved them apart by about 15mm.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-07%2010.12.31.jpg
The steering column I had was out of a Spitfire so had the bracket for a steering lock.. that had to go too....
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-07%2010.18.21.jpg
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-07%2010.24.32.jpg
so that gave me plenty of clearance for the steering column...
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-07%2010.35.23.jpg
The BMW e30 has a remote servo that is mounted in the passenger side and connects with a push rod. so with a bit of playing around with the positioning so it operates freely and clears the wheels, I welded the bracket in as part of the frame.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-07%2019.27.32.jpg
The frame still needs a bit of tidying up with a bit more to cut out and modify to get it looking nice, but it all works and with some adjustment (cutting and welding) of the pedal positions, it should all be fine. :lie:
It is worth noting that Mike's Miglia Speedster kit has a heavy duty bracket normally welded into the frame for the standard triumph brake and clutch master cylinders etc, and all this work I am doing it extra as I wanted to try something different!
I also made up a recess in the centre tunnel for the handbrake. I am making the tunnel higher in this car, so it feels more sporty  but I didn't want the handbrake to be too high.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-04-07%20-%20Frame/2013-04-07%2019.27.53.jpg
So a good weekend's fetling and engineering, with just the tidying up left to do on the frame now. You get a fibreglass bulkhead with this kit, so I am going to have to modify that to fit around my new pedal mounts, but fibreglass it a little easier to adjust so I am hoping that part goes smoothly (or stickily!)
Anyway, next weekend is engine in and floors in, get the wiring sorted and brakes pipes and fuel pipes all connected....in my dreams at least!

Your build's coming along nicely 'Tone.
What's the reason for going with the BMW pedals in place of the Spit ones, is it just because you can?
Your taller prop tunnel with recessed handbrake is interesting. It really shows the versatility of the concept - you want a snug fitting cockpit so you're making a tall tunnel, I wanted more elbow room and wider seats so I made a very low one.

Mr T, I wanted a servo on this one and the complete pedal assembly with servo, clutch master cylinder etc, was only £65. I am also thinking the modern pedals may improve the drive-ability!
Also, as you say - because I can. :amen:
Like a lot of us on here, I enjoy an engineering challenge, and at least we can now say it can be done! Mind you I am going to reserve judgement until I get the engine in and it all running - moon-rover stylee - so I can test it all. I will do it all before the body goes on in case I need to change it all back to standard! :dizzy:
I got back my modified gear extension. It is mammoth! :jaw:
The seating position is further back and so Mike does a simple extension kit on an exchange basis. It is a machined billet of aluminium and a dowelled and welded rod. I wasn't expecting this though.....

no update for a while as I have been out enjoying a new motorbike and I started a new job so been busy!
but here are a few pics of some progress - more on www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk if you are interested...
I had to 'adjust' the linkage to the servo - so a chamfer on the gear extension and a bend in the rod with my knee managed to sort that!
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-06-01%20-%20Brake%20Servo/2013-06-01%2010.31.11.jpg
Played around with a lowered floorpan and found my seats were slightly too wide. I have now narrowed them by 20mm and they will fit fine. I am going for the Landrover seats again as they were very comfy in the Sammio Spyder. The backs will hinge forward to access the luggage area and with any luck I won't need to make them any shorter like I had to with the Sammio Spyder.

to this....
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-07-06%20-%20Wheels/2013-03-23%2015.59.35.jpg
and they look very nice on the chassis....
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-07-06%20-%20Wheels/2013-07-06%2012.25.00.jpg
It did mean that I had to modify the steering rack so I could limit the lock to avoid the bigger wheels and tyres hitting on the front outrigger. A 25mm sleeve was fashioned and welded to either end of the rack..
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-07-06%20-%20Wheels/2013-07-06%2011.02.41.jpg
This still gives plenty of steering lock but does not touch now...
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-07-06%20-%20Wheels/2013-07-06%2012.25.25.jpg
Then I made up the floorpans for the front as well, and they all fitted quite well...
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-07-13%20-%20Floorpans/20130712_134837.jpg
And with the frame placed on it, it is starting to look like a car...
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-07-13%20-%20Floorpans/20130712_135117.jpg
So not a huge amount of progress, but I am going to try and get things moving now, so I can try and enjoy what is left of the summer! :eusa_think:
Next up is a modified exhaust for which I will make up my own and use an 'end-can' from a motorbike. I have several lying around from bike projects so wondered what it would sound like!

I have ordered up the rest of the tubing to make up my own custom exhaust, so hopefully in the next week or so I want to get it wired up and running! :pray2:
I am still debating on the colour, and might be swaying to a blue this time. I would like to spray it myself, but not sure the missus will put up with the circus tent again! :moony:
I think I have nearly everything to finish the car now, so hopefully can crack on over the next few weeks. I would like to try and get it inspected and changed by the end of August and then on the road in September. That's the plan anyway!

I also started to make up a new bulkhead - since I am using a non-standard pedal assembly and servo it is going to be impossible to use the bulkhead Mike supplies as part of his kit, so I am going to make up a vertical bulkhead.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-07-28%20-%20Radiator/2013-07-27%2015.12.20.jpg

I did get a lot of little jobs done, like the servo hose, breather hoses, fuel pipes and I got the brakes and clutch bled too.
Once I have painted all the brackets and metalwork I will start to plumb in the engine for good, and I am hoping that if I can doing the wiring next weekend, then I might be able to get it started next sunday. I can then hear what the exhaust sounds like!

Weekend update.....
Got hold of a Spitfire MKIV heater matrix and fan and made up a mounting for it. It is a lot slimmer than the Herald one and so I don't need to cut it up or modify it.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-08-04%20-%20panelling/2013-08-02%2019.28.06.jpg
Started to panel out the bulkhead and centre tunnel - the front parts will be removable so I can get to the clutch slave cylinder and propshaft bolts in the future.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-08-04%20-%20panelling/2013-08-02%2019.28.18.jpg
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-08-04%20-%20panelling/2013-08-02%2019.28.37.jpg
Then took it all apart and resin and painted all the panels and frame...
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-08-04%20-%20panelling/2013-08-03%2016.23.06.jpg
Then plumbed in all the engine with the radiator and header tank mounted. The header is out of 1600 Vitesse and looks period. I had one in my Sammio Spyder and this one I managed to grab on ebay.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-08-04%20-%20panelling/2013-08-04%2017.40.02.jpg
Made up the hinge point for the seats so I could get the seating position right and it is very comfortable. Even the pedals and gearstick are in the right position!
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-08-04%20-%20panelling/2013-08-04%2017.40.24.jpg
Got hold of some 50mm diameter nylon and got a friend of mine to turn me up a rather nice roller throttle pedal .... it's a bit different and reminds me of some VW Beetles I had where I put a skateboard wheel on as a throttle pedal.
http://www.mymigliaspeedster.co.uk/build/2013-08-04%20-%20panelling/2013-08-04%2017.41.02.jpg
So a bit more progress made. :thumb:

Clive, it was by chance really.
I ordered a catalogue from Car builder Solutions and then looked at their website. This is where I got the BMW E30 pedal idea from - this article to be exact: http://www.p4replica.co.uk/2012/10/cockpit-layout-23-october-2012.html
Takes a bit of fiddling, but it should give a modern feel to brakes as well as the added safety of dual circuit brake lines. I stress "should" as I have yet to start the engine and try it on the road, so I am hoping all should be okay. If anything the servo may be too big, in which case a Peugeot 207 fits I am told!
Copy away, that's what these forums are for! :amen:

the miglia far outstrips the original sammio for quality in all areas...layup,fit etc just by looking at the pics
as does the new ribble/pilot by the look of things
if yours is an original sammio read all the build threads for all the fun in obtaining a near symetrical body

I don't disagree with the raising of the quality with the latest packages from Miglia and Ribble.
I have an original Sammio body though, the quality of the moulding wasn't great, the shell isn't symmetrical, but it was great value for money, I thoroughly enjoyed building it, I love the way it drives and it looks like this -
http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag120/smonebillion/003_zps8fee4bbf.jpg (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/smonebillion/media/003_zps8fee4bbf.jpg.html)
It stops people in their tracks wherever I take it and nobody's ever said 'hang on, that shell's not symmetrical!' As Gary J once pointed out, you never look at both sides at the same time...
If you already have a Sammio shell, why not just build it? You won't regret it :)

Shadow, pop by anytime - dave (the rattler) pops in and we have a chin wag over the kits and what we are doing and what we have bought. PM me for my address.
Regarding the Miglia vs Sammio debate, they are both the same really, but here are my initial thoughts - although I do like them both! Again - I can't comment on the Ribble because I haven't built one ------ yet :)
I like the Miglia one piece body rather than the flip front of the Sammio, as I think the longer front end makes it a little more classic in shape.
The Miglia pushes the bulkhead back and uses a fibreglass bulkhead so it makes it a little more challenging to build with gearstick extension and steering column extension, but again the cockpit being further back makes it a bit more sports car like.
Both cars (and the ribble obviously) have to go through the process of bonding the body on and using the Spitfire fuel tank - the Miglia puts the tank behind the rear axle giving you storage space behind the seats, whereas the original Sammio and now Ribble put the tank forwards with the option of a boot space. Either work well and to be honest these cars are more for fun and runs out rather than serious touring (unless you are that way inclined). You can be creative with side pockets (as I did in my Sammio) or build in storage in other areas if you want to.
The Sammio has no doors which means climbing over - but they are so low anyway that this is fun rather than a problem. the doors on the miglia are nice to have but aligning and sorting out hinges and locks is a challenge too.
The beauty of them all is that they are based on a car that is simple with plentiful spares and lots of opportunities to make them your own as you have seen. If you have the Sammio body, then use that. A lot of the issues with the body symmetry are not noticed once you have built the car - no one ever notices.
The second one is always easier and you learn what works and what doesn't, and for this one I am making subtle modifications such as electric radiator fans (blowing on a custom built radiator) and leaving out things like a stereo system - you can't hear anything anyway!
If I were you Ikon, I would build the Sammio to get the experience - sell it and build the next one to keep!
Mister Towed
2nd November 2013, 12:43
Well said that man. Agree with all of the above - both are pretty cars that will be a challenge/joy to build/own - it's really down to personal taste which one you build. I happen to prefer the flip open bonnet on the Sammio for better access to the engine, which I've already had to remove to get at the clutch, but I can see the attraction of not having to align it on the Miglia.
You pays your money, you takes your choice.

Hi Tlrtone, have you positioned the bulkhead yet? when you do, i'd love to see some pics of where the bulkhead meets the front section of the floor, and how much clearance there is in the pedal section of the lower front floor, i'm wondering if the front section could be done flat, rather than a drop section. Looking forward to the next installment, hope all is well with you.

Mr T,
I have had a year off in effect, lots of stuff going on that has meant that I decided not even to take the cover off this year.
I have a few weeks off over christmas so I will be sorting the garage so that may give me the motivation to crack on with it!
I will definitely have it on the road for next summer, the engine/chassis are all done and so it needs, the body bonding on and wiring sorted and then just the interior. Hopefully if the weather holds up for Jan/Feb I should get it sorted early next year!
I'll start to drop in the forums a little more over christmas so I can see how things have been since I went away......

Glad to hear it's just on hold and not an abandoned project. A bit of spring sunshine should get the motivational juices flowing.

Good to hear from you tone, your build was my inspiration to start, so keen to see how it ends (and if i get mine on the road first! ;-)
