I am attempting to finish a part restored Jc Midge (Triumph Herald Chassis, ford engine, home made body) and the wiring is a mess. This is my first project and I have never done wiring before can any one advise as to whether I am best off making a loom for scatch or going for one of the universal type kit car looms. Many thanks.

Hi James,
It depends how confident you are with wiring!, I'm a great fan of rip it out and replace it with a custom one (which I build). Autosparks do very nice looms for standard cars so they may not be able to help unless you want to buy a triumph loom and adjust/butcher it (which isn't a bad idea as it will come with all the right connectors). If you want to do it yourself then car builder solutions do a electrical module which has all the realys, fuses, flashers etc so you just need to attach and run the wires to the right place. Haynes do a book on vehicle wiring which is very useful.

If you are using a classic style engine with carb, dissy etc then it doesn't matter which engine you use as it will only need a feed to the coil, alternator, starter motor and a fuel pump if it is electric.

If you build one from scratch yourself then the more planning and sketching of wiring diagrams before you start cutting wires will help in the long run you can quite easily get overwhelmed when you have 70 wires in front of you and don't know which one goes where!!

Hope that helps
Chris

I found this invaluavle when I wired up my Sportster:

Very usefull if you're going full 'build your own loom' mode.

I also found these very useful, for marking individual circuits:

That way you can cut down on the number of coloured wires you need, and buy in bulk. The majority of the wiring in my car is Red and Black!

Good luck! :)

Personally I would make one from scratch. The engine/chassis combination that you have means that it should be pretty simple - no fuel injection, ECU or other complications to worry about.

Good luck

I used the wiring loom from http://www.premierwiring.co.uk/

Although it is 'Serria based' in terms of the switchgear it has all the necessary wires for lights, instruments, warning lights. Is sticks to the Ford colour scheme and would be a good starting point.
