Thanks Mr T. It was the brightest yellow on the Rustoleum colour pallet so isn't car specific.
I've bought 5 litres of primer and colour. I'm hoping that will give me 2 coats of base and 3 of top coat.

The orange (lemon?) peel is quite bad but as I discovered on the bonnet of you get enough paint on you can cut this back. One other note of caution, if you are painting a really bright colour with the garage door open the flies love it. These can be removed when the paint is dry with a little bit of wet and dry
Thanks guys. The photographs hide a whole host of horrors but I think most of these can be sorted once the paint has properly hardened and i can cut it back. Only two more coats to go.
Just looking to get a good, thick layer with the roller to allow me to cut the surface back off. It worked quite well on the bonnet, although the edges are, inevitably, thin.
High density foam rollers. I removed the lumpy bits from the primer but didn't flat it as I knew the gloss would be just as orange peeley (is that a word?). I'm going to give at least a month to harden before going near it with and wet and dry after the final coat.

One problem with leaving it to harden and flatten is that I have borrowed the garage it's in so I only have a week to do this It's a questions of getting the paint on and sorting it out in my drive a few weeks down the line.
Thanks all - took your sage advice and cut the first coat back with a wet sand before applying the second coat and it looks much better, much less lemon peel.
Tomorrow will be coat three and the paint is hard enough for a wet sanding after being left overnight. There is another advantage with a bit of sanding as it's easier to see where you are applying the new paint on the flat finish (well durr!)
Oh, and the flies are easily removed with 600 grit wet and dry.
Today's top tip: If there is likely to be a cloud burst shut the garage door. The heavens opened as I was painting the front of the car and by the time I got to the back the soft paint was wet and covered in crap which had kicked up off the drive way.
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!
Ah well, I'm going to leave it to dry under a heat lamp tonight and see what the damage is tomorrow.
So today was spent putting the beastie back together. Apart from the door handles and light covers, it's now reconstructed.

On the road, took it to work today. I'm going to leave it a few weeks before even thinking about flatting it back. I also need to invest in a polisher and some different compounds.
If, like me, Photoshop is a mystery but you have kids with a PS4 or X-Box with a game like Gran Turismo you can by a 250GTO, Cobra or 250 SWB and then play with different colours and put stripes and badges on it to see what works best.
My son played around with a 250LM for me last night and I have decided on a white and black stripe along the length of the car to break up the yellow.
As an impatient man I decided to flat back the boot.

I think you can see the how well the orange peel can be cut back. It is isn't, by any means, a concours finish but it doesn't look too bad. Just the rest of the car to flat back now :-(
Couple of hours, but it is a big, flat panel so not too difficult to do.
My wife goes in for a knee replacement at the end of July so I will be taking a couple of weeks off to help her recuperate. I hope that this will give me a bit of time to get the car sanded and polished, although she might have other ideas

For those thinking of the hard top solution, here's a profile shot. Like many others, the bloody roof has cracked across the front so I have to work on that.
