February 2018

Maybe a subtle, no bling example like this ? Some look too overly restored, I don't want that, keep it period and simple.

March 2018

3 Mar 2018, 6:10pm General Update
Hoped to have had my "7" car by now but the weather has put a stop to that. With any luck it will be here by next weekend.

Progress so far has included some prep to the rear end. The last of the paint and a little filler here and there has been removed and all good so far.

The front end still needs the new bonnet and scuttle making but the wings and nose are shown here as a mock up , loosely tacked together.

Two sets of wheels to choose from. I want to go with the deep dish set but it will depend on the width of the axle, adaptors etc etc.

They will look a whole lot better I know. Until I offer them up on the rolling chassis its hard to tell. I'm not sure how much is added when the adaptors are fitted, I've got to go and collect them. If I'm lucky they will bolt on and be a perfect fit !!

Thanks for putting up those photo's Paul, I still can't do it !

The red car above is the look I'm after. I've decided to go with a fully finished, fully painted and trimmed as close to the original as possible. It will be void of any bling, the dark red and silver/grey wheels will look better than bright red with chrome wires you might find on some "restored" examples.

The donor car is here now, only delayed thanks to the weather last week. Yes I know its far too good to mess around with but I wanted a well built example to build from.
I've offered up the wire wheels with the adaptors and luckily the wide, deep dish set I bought will fit under the TR arches and look just right !

My thoughts exactly! I could have bought a cheap example, there are plenty out there, but they come with problems. This is the best example I could find.

The "7" is now stripped down with all the exterior parts removed. Not a massive job but it has taken most of the day. No surprises other than a little damage to a lower chassis rail, an easy fix.
I've had the deep dish wire wheels reconditioned and two fitted with narrow 165/80-15 tyres for the front. I want to go with 185's on the back but I need to check clearances first.
I'll have the rear body section offered up in the week so I'll be able to work out mounting points. The plan is to have the front and rear easily removable as two sections so they will be bolted onto the chassis.

Here are a couple of recent photos. First one shows the largely stripped down "7".
The second shows the rear TR body section very roughly sitting in place.
The driving position is very short just like the real thing. I might need to shorten the steering column 2 or 3 inches to make it more manageable but I'll decide that when I have the front section offered up.
The rear wheel is just mocked up but it looks like I can go to 185 section tyres as planned, this is the 165/80-15 tyre intended for the front.

Managed to offer up the front end tonight. The doors are simply taped into position and the wheels are just resting against the hubs.
It looks like the whole concept is going to work and my original measurements were really close.
I hope the progress will continue over the next few weeks to a point where it should all be bolted on ready for paint but I'll be taking my time to get everything right.
27 Mar 2018, 7:38pm General Update
It was more a sigh of relief ! It does actually go together !
27 Mar 2018, 9:20pm Engine Chassis and Body

The rear end will to mount up to the chassis. A few simple brackets welded the chassis and matching brackets welded to the original steel tube structure of the rear end will secure it in place. The front end will need more work to mount it. The doors are simple but require the hinging method to be worked out.

April 2018

1 Apr 2018, 9:56pm Mechanical Overhaul Chassis and Body
Not much progress this weekend other than to make a small repair on the lower chassis rail and tidy up some of chassis where panels had been attached. I need to redrill my hub adaptors to the correct PCD before fitting the wheels and lining up the body.
4 Apr 2018, 3:20pm General Update
No I didn't, send a pm.
9 Apr 2018, 10:40pm Mechanical Overhaul
Had some larger 185/80 - 15 tyres fitted to the rear wheels. They fill the arches really nicely, just waiting on the machine shop to finish modding my hub adaptors so I can bolt them on.
Once that's done I can line up the rear end accurately and make some bracketry to hold it in place. The front end will require considerably more work but I'm quite happy with progress so far! Photos to follow.

Wheel adaptors came back today. I've only offered one of the rear wheels up tonight but it looks just right. I'll get the others mounted up and I should be in a position to finalise the rear body fitment over the weekend.
Also ordered a 15" wood rim steering wheel of a similar design to the original TR. I plan to make the interior look like the original cars did back in the 1950's.
14 Apr 2018, 6:00pm Mechanical Overhaul Chassis and Body
All the wheels mounted up today and offered the body work up again. After a lot of jiggling around its all sitting pretty square over the chassis. I've made some brackets to attach the rear end in place and welded these to the chassis. I'm making eight attachment points which should be plenty once its all bolted down. Front end and doors next.
16 Apr 2018, 9:23pm General Update
A couple of weeks to Stoneliegh , there's a slim possibility it might be on the road by then !
16 Apr 2018, 10:17pm Chassis and Body Interior & Trim
It won't be painted by then but I'm hoping to at least have the body together and fixed in place. I'll just need the lights in and a seat and technically its drivable ! Pictures to follow...........

Here are a few pics from the weekend. The rear end sits on the "7" upper chassis at exactly the right height . The side shots show the fitment of the deep dish wires with the correct size tyres all bolted up. My measurements of the "7" wheel base and track were pretty close to the TR so I'm really happy with the combination with the wheels bolted in place. The Ford 1700 cross flow is good but I plan to fit a V6 at some point as it will make the right noises !
