Problem. have bought smiths tailor made guages and am using e36 engine.Do I have to replace these sensors in the block for the guages and if so what do I do with the harness plugs that join the sensors to the loom and ecu?Feel a bit dim!
You will almost certainly have to replace or supplement the sensors with ones specifc to the guages you have bought.
For the E30 it doesn't seem too difficult. There are two temperature sensors - one for the ECU and one for the temperature gauge - so you just replace the one for the gauge with one specifc to the gauge you have bought.
For the oil pressure I believe the trick is to add a T piece to the hole for the oil pressure switch - I think there are some pictures on Patrick's web site (I am not using an oil pressure gauge myself)
I guess the engine from the E36 will be similar - but you are going to need a little research....
For water temp on the M20 I replaced the brown sensor with the one for the guage (blue it for the ECU) I just snipped the OEM plug off the loom and crimped a spade terminal on instead
For oil pressure I put in a T piece with the old pressure switch on the bottom and the pressure sensor in the side of it.
Hi Patrick. I'm sure I've read this somewhere on forum but cant find it. Can you tell me what size the thread is in the engine block for the oil pressure t-piece. Also the thread in the thermostat housing for temp sensor adaptor, so I buy the right ones. (I have been known to take threads and get them measured and still end up with wrong ones!).
Thanks
Alfie.
I know this is late but have you sorted out this problem?
I had the same problem fitting both oil pressure and temp and have a solution.
Round the back of the oil filter housing there is a large plug with a hex in it.
I removed this and had a local engineering company to machine up a copy with flats on the outside edge for tightening and a drilling to screw in a sender obtained from Smiths.
Also a 'tee' piece was machined from a piece of hex bar to screw both the oil light sender and pressure sender.
I have a photo of this but the file is too big to send to this forum.
