I'm on the look-out for a Type-R engine for my 5exi.
Does anybody know if a JDM engine would be a problem? As far as I can tell the main difference is that it has a LSD (and 20 extra horses ). Will the LSD be a problem, or is it just something hidden away in an indentical looking gearbox?
I thought the civic type r already had a LSd as standard?
Wouldn't have thought it to be a problem. How are the gettting the extra horses? At a guess a chipped ECU. No physical size difference. So should drop straight in. Some of the other honda bods might know.
To my knowledge the JDM engines differ only in the map, and the use of wideband lambda sensors, rather than the narrowband of the UK engines.
I chose a UK engine, as I was a bit wary of the importers, and also thought it might be easier dealing with the DVLA if I've got a uk engine that can be traced to a car / vin / year of manufacturer.
I thought about buying a LSD equiped 'box..... but decided that I'd rather have one wheel spin up as a warning, instead of both breaking traction in one go. From what I understand, this is why the Elise / VX220 don't have an LSD from the factory.
Hi, My understanding is similar to that of alackofspeed in that the only differance is in the mapping......but the way they are mapped for the extra 20 bhp means that they can only run on 99/100 ron fuel and we don't have that so I've been told that you have to get them re-mapped to run uk fuel then they are only 197bhp as is the uk engine

The JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) specification K20A's have an LSD (Limited Slip Differential), a lightened flywheel and closer gearing in 4th, 5th & 6th. They also have an additional 20bhp (when used with 100RON) from a cam, inlet & piston change.
If you could be bothered you could run the engine on optimax (98 Ron) and add an octane booster.
Just a bit OT, but Optimax is/was consistently 98.4 RON. Sometimes as high as 99.3RON, so it is safe to say the new fuel is just optimax rebadged...
Shell have no doubt done this due to everyone else bringing out 99RON fuels.
Shell have always been guarded on the true octane rating of Optimax, so if they suddenly started claimning it was about 99, they'd have a mutiny!
A quick rebrand is the safest bet...

Found this article as I have been reasearching the type r engine and mods available!! I think the bits about the gear ratios are very apt as with 15" tyres the gearing will be very low I guess about 4500 rpm at 80mph and on the jdm even higher!
I'm glad I don't have a jdm engine now reading about the lsd
