Bonnet fixing

18 May 2017, 4:10pm
Can anyone give me the link to the thread on bonnet hinging? :pray2: From memory it was some 2" strap iron round the mouth welded to two rounded plates and bolted to the existing front end? the strap iron bonded to the bonnet and grille fitting inside the strap iron?

Any pics.....? scrolled back through a load of posts but cant seem to find it?......Sure Gary had a "Build Guide" on it somewhere?:frusty:

You've pretty much nailed the bonnet mounting method above, Nick.

The, ahem, comprehensive build manual disappeared during the Ribble ownership of the project (not sure if you kept up with the politics of the whole thing...), but it isn't exactly rocket science and you can pretty much make it up as you go along. There's always help to be had here too if you just ask - there's no such thing as a stupid question, especially when building a Sammio.

At risk of getting a load of oo-er, Missus responses, here's some pictures of my hoop -

I fibreglassed mine in to make it stronger and it's still fine after four years on the road.

Mr T posted this on a Tribute thread recently...

Mister Towed wrote:
The Sammio way was to bond and 'glass a steel hoop into the oval 'mouth'.

The brackets are welded to the hoop and on mine the chip cutter grille, which is very heavy, is also bolted to the brackets. It makes for a very strong, integrated bonnet bracket that hasn't caused me the slightest problem in four years on the road -

Maybe something similar could work on the A352 grille opening?

D'Oh!

Too slow typing again.

P.S.
The build guide was actually on the Sammio website itself.

The other way to find things is to use the useful links "sticky" thread and check other builds.

Hope that helps, Paul. :)

I shamelessly stole Mr T's "scissor hinge" idea on my Cordite build and it worked a treat.

I have , obviously , done the hoop method as above ..but another way I have done it is to use the front tube as the pivot ,
sleeving another piece of tube over it and welding it to a short piece of 20mm or 25mm box that welds the bonnet end to a 5mm plate bolted through the front ..it is attached with a domehead bolt just under the indicator position generally ..

you will need to trim some of the front valance away to get clearance on the front chassis rails ... it becomes obvious when you try to open it !!

The Formosa is a similar system , but the deep rounded front valance and hugging arches makes them a bit more complicated ..

Here another way of fixing the bonnet, I used this method on the BMW powered Sammio..

You can just see the heads of the fixing bolts between the grill and indicator.
