BMW Z4 E89 2nd Generation... Musings

22 Feb 2016, 5:14pm
Dear All,

I post in this forum, as whilst it doesn't relate to a current Tribute kit, I know that Tribute are looking at the Z4, and I like the style of their kits, so it seems the most relevant place.

Been looking and dreaming at Tribute's Z3 kits for a few months now, looking at the articles in the mags, and thinking about "Wouldn't it be nice"...

Pipe dream at the moment, and will be for some time; however, I know that some people have also started to look at the Z4 as their next source of Inspiration.

I was driving into work this morning, and I passed a 2nd Generation Z4 with the coupe-convertible roof. I watched some videos of this very elegant mechanism in operation on YouTube.

It made me think, whilst the 2nd Gen Z4 is currently a bit on the pricey side to be chopping about with, in time it will likely come down in price... the roof is the main thing that interests me - the practicality of a hard top and the fun of a soft top without the drawbacks.

I wondered if anyone had any musings about how the 2nd Gen Z4 might be restyled in a 1960's style?

Cost of a 2nd gen Z4

The cheapest 2nd generation (2009 on) Z4 I can find on Auto Trader is £6350 (with 91,500 miles on the clock. They quickly go up to over £7500, so not really a cheap option.

How similar is a z4 to a z3 as regards bolting on a Tribute bodykit?

How about a Z4 with a modern/vintage look similar to the BMW328 Homage Concept car but adapted to the Z4 (or Z3).

More silly thoughts...
Yes, the Z4, esp. the 2nd gen is a pricey bet at the moment, and it will be a while before they come down in price; but it will be exciting when they do - the technology of the folding roof I find quite exciting... also nice sat nav / DAB options e.t.c.

Another silly thought about the Mk1 Z4...
I quite like the lines of the Coupe, but think it's a shame it hasn't got an open top...

Firing the imagination.. the Z4 Coupe roof is only four bolts and some Sikaflex or similar...

A chap has made a carbon drop-in replacement/

I wonder could you cut a segment or two out of a Fiat Stilo segmental sunroof? Asking for aggravation as they are probably unreliable as it is... but thought it was a nice thought...

Just a silly sketch with a Z4 Coupe... Mito Rear Lights, Mini Cooper S 2015, Rover 45 Numberplate, Z300S Front.

Probably because of the Photoshop composite image using photos from slightly different perspectives, that reminds me of a Mini Marcos, which to my mind is one of the ugliest cars ever!

To be fair it is better than my prototype diagram for the Z300S

You were lucky that Chris and Dan made you such a pretty car from that picture

One day I'll get over my embarrassment and show you the lousy effort I did for Chris to show how the SWB could be produced.

Yes, but obviously the shape that's left is different.
