Gear knob thread

28 Jan 2014, 4:31pm
Hi

I was wondering if any of the forum members can clarify a few points, i believe the thread size for a spirfire gear knob is 5/16 18tpi UNC, can anybody confirm this and a ford type 9 gearbox is M10 x 1.5, is this correct?
I am looking to make few gear knobs out of ally to replicate a fifty racer.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry can't help with sizes but why not machine the hole to take a solid nylon insert that people can drill to size and then wind on themselves, that way it can fit both?

Well said, my alloy ball gearknob came with just that, a set of variously sized nylon inserts and an allen grub screw to lock it into place.

I will using them myself so knowing the correct thread size is the way to go, get it wright in the beginning leads to less problems in the future. I have access to a cnc lathe so thought while it was free i would make good use.

Thought i would post a pic of a gear knob i made today along with a couple of lock nuts. At the minute the body has a 5/16 UNC thread with the option to open out to M10 if a type 9 box is fitted.
