I am working on the cosmetics for the car and want to knock up a badge for the front grille. I don't know what logo I want on there are the moment and am not sure if I want one at all so don't want to spend money on one. With this in mind I hatched a cunning plan...

Print out the logo on paper. Use this as a template to cut it out of some sheet material a few mm thick (hopefully I can find some plastic). Chamfer the edges of the resulting logo to give it some slight shaping. Glue on some kitchen foil to make it look shiney.

I can then stick it onto the grille and drive round for a few weeks deciding whether or not I like it.

Will this work?

Will the foil discolour, fall apart, explode killing me, my car and 100 people in the near vicinity?

What about spraying it?

While looking for some plastic to use I found a stack of unused CDs which have a lovely shiney finish.

First print out the logo (be careful not to infringe copyright)


Then modify it so it fits on the available material


Then get a sharp pair of scissors (you may want a responsible adult to help with this) and cut out the pieces


And fitted

I used a Hyundai ''Tuscani'' badge from ebay, it's similar to the tribute one but the T is in red.

Cheapest one of those I can find on eBay is £25

That's the one I bought, it does look good though, having said that, yours looks pretty good too.

Will the foil discolour? --- no
Will the foil fall apart? --- probably
Will it explode killing me? --- it seems unlikely but it is good to consider health and safety
[Will it explode killing] my car? --- You can't technically kill a car since it was never technically alive in the first place
[Will it explode killing] 100 people in the near vicinity? --- even less likely, again it is a useful exercise to consider the well-being of the general public

If you want I can mail you some 1mm stainless steel plate, cut out your badge and it will polish like chrome and never rust, explode, or any other awful thing?

Scottie - I may well take you up on that but not quite yet. I really am playing to see what looks good and what doesn't before making any final decisions. You never know, Chris might get a batch of grille badges made up and save us all time and effort.

id like the logo drilled into the side vent instead of the bar . but not sure how it will look. if he was to have it in different sizes for the grill and bonnet badges, back,front etc.izza: op2: plastic coated or stainless steel. 3d,flat

MrTowed - I nearly made that very badge but two things stopped me.

1 I am trying not to make a replica and that badge would provoke abuse from anyone in the know
2 the CD has a big hole in the middle which would ruin the look

I have a vinyl cutter, could cut pretty much anything you want in silver vinyl, you could then cut a disc out of anything and paint it black put the vinyl on and bobs your mothers brother...?

Just bought some of this paint, over silver it looks chrome, but its expensive and I doubt the results, I will post some pictures.

Tonyt, can you please keep me posted on this product, as I have been after something like this for ages, but most of the things I looked at, get very bad reviews?

Will do Scottie, going to try it on the bumpers of the camper that I have they are mat black but I will spay them silver first, then mayby on the rare as rocking horse poo or hens teeth alloys that the refubishing company have just rejected as one has elongated bolt holes. I will be refurbishing these myself now, as I did with the Ferrari wheels on my kit, they are magnisum alloy and the advice online was to shot blast them with plastic pellets do not paint them as it is an active metal that gasses off. Cleaned them with acid, then used emery tape, sprayed with high build filler, then paint, then a clear coat. No probs no bubbles under the paint. As for the elongation, in a previous life before I had to waste tax payers money, I was involved in repairing a shaft on a large fuel pump. The shaft was shot but we used a polymer filler product from Belzona then turned it on a lathe back to as it was, this is a chemical metal that sets so hard it can be worked, my plan is to use this on the alloys to rebuild the bolt holes then re work them. Would use a tig but the company who rejected them do this for cracks but not bolt holes so they say nothing can be done. I disagree and refuse to scrap the wheels. Build is looking good by the way apart from the injuries, blood, sweat and tears and all that.

Thanks Tony, Ref the alloy wheels, not so long back I had an alloy wheel with a nasty crack on the rim, and I had the crack welded locally by a guy in a factory, who only charged a tenner.
I had to profile and sand the rim myself but that was easy task.
Can your elongated holes not be welded and re drilled on a jig?

I still have the 3D file for a Tribute badge if anyone has access to a 3D printer.
