Porsche Boxter/Speedster 356 replica ?

2 Nov 2013, 9:18am
Hi there to all.

For over 30 years we have had a countless number of manufacturers building Porsche 356 Speedster replicas around the world. Legendary names such as Apal, Intermeccanica, Chesil just to mame a few. Even Dax (Cobra) had a go in the mid 80,s. With the exeption of PGO who makes a neo-classic Peugeot based version all the rest are VW Beetle based.

But has anyone thought of building a Porsche based speedster replica? I know that using a 911 would be out of the question as these are already considered classics, but what about building a Speedster using a Porsche Boxter ? These cars have already been around for 17 years and cheap examples can be found for under 5000.£ € $

This would be more of a body panel replacement project. Removing wings, bonnet and bumper from the front, and wings, boot lid and bumper from the rear and leaving the rest of the car untouched. Then just replace with Speedster style panels. You could even modify an existing Speedster kit to fit onto the Boxter. Its true that the car wouldn´t be 100% replica, it would be a neo-classic style similar to the PGO Speedster, but it would be a real Porsche. I´m sure that you could have a fullu finished car for under 10000.£ € $

This is just an idea. What do you think?

I'd say that would be a winner ..all over the world it would sell

Hi there, its a pity that I don´t have a Boxter doner car or the Speedster panels otherwise I would certainly let the Tribute team have a go at building it. I´m sure they would make a great car.

Who knows, we might have a future model for the Trubute line-up here. Maybe a Tribute Speedster ?

Here is a side view.

I must say those prices look interesting, as does the price of the Widebody shell. (We are getting into Wheeler Dealer territory here)

There seems to be a lot more Boxter´s for under 4000 than what I thought at first.

Yeah, I have the same problem. In the UK Boxters, and other doner cars can be found for decent prices, but like me, if you live outside the UK, prices for similar cars are quite a lot more expensive :-(

Well, nearly 4 years since I posted this and finally someone is going to build and sell something nearly identical.

The company is called Starkespeedster un USA. they are planning on building 356 Speedster replicas using Boxters as a base. Prices range from 59k to 149k $. I think a little expensive. The finished cars will be named the Starke 357 Revolution Speedster.

Nice shape, but it's going to be way too big and waaay too expensive for what is effectively a $5,000 donor in a fibreglass bodykit.

Following the rumoured action by Ferrari, I can see why they have chosen to go down a completely different route........and produce something that definitely won't annoy another car manufacturer.

Looks like an interesting project from DNA, similar to the Starke Speedster.

Shame there´s not much info about it on their webpage apart from a few photos. The price shoudln´t be as high as Starke.

The DNA version looks so much better than the Starke.

Won't it (annoy) though? I remember a famous case between 2 kit manufacturers where the maker of the 'genuine item' successfully brought an action about copying the profile of the car.

Karmann Ghia?

I've also dreamt of same... Boxster with a Karmann Ghia body... I love the idea of both-

I'd be more interested in this - but not sure if it's a boxer underneath?

I have seen this one before and it looks very good.
I believe it´s a carbon fibre composite monocoque shell with a 3,4 litre engine.

I am sure someone could make something similar using a VW Beetle chassis as a base.

Vintech 550. Carbon chassis and body with a custom 3litre flat 4 aluminium block engine.

It was a prototype to launch a design business so they don’t actually produce it which is a shame. Given the spec it would have to cost well over £100,000 even if you could buy one.
