Scimitar Se5 Starter Motor

7 Aug 2013, 3:22pm
My G-46 still will not start when it's hot:icon_cry:
When hot it turns over like it's got a flat battery but leave it a while and it'll spin over fine and fire first time.
I now belive it's the starter motor even though I have had it checked.
The question is where can I buy one and will the later pre-engage type fit?
Mine is the early pre 1968 Essex engine.
Any info would be recived greatfully.

The ring gear on the flywheel is different I think as the inertia one has a leading edge and the pre- engaged doesn't. I think they have to match. May get more advice on a Scimitar forum.

I don't have a great deal of knowledge of Fords but I did once work on an Essex that had a similar starting problem that was traced back to a manky old solenoid. It seemed to work fine when everything was cold, but gave a poor (or no) contact when everything was warm.

The symptoms actually sound like an intermittent earth problem, but why it would be so linked to temp I couldn't guess. Have you tried adding a temporary earthing strap or getting a multimeter on it when it is giving problems?

If you have had the starter motor checked and it works fine from cold, I'd suggest the problem is elsewhere.........but there is a large body of evidence that also suggests that I have been wrong in the past.

Best of luck.

Oxford could be on the right track there - I replaced the starter motor and solenoid on my Vitesse engine (because both were knackered) but it would do nothing on about four out of five turns of the key, not even a click.

I replaced the ignition barrel, thinking that must be causing the problem, but the fault remained. Finally, I gave the screw holding the solenoid earth lead to the bulkhead a good scrub with sand paper and it now turns over first time every time. :)

Good luck!

Hi all, I have replaced the altanator, solenoid, earth strap ect, even lagged the exhaust.
I starts first time, every time even when it's been running for a while but drive it and get it up to running temp and it's like the battery is flat, leave it an hour and it's fine. :eusa_wall:

Anyone what to buy a G-46 in need of a paint job, with oil pressure issue and a starting problem. :eusa_shifty:

Fitted a new starter motor.

It still turns over slowly but at least it now starts when hot.
