Relay Chatter

7 May 2013, 4:02am
All I have now taken the plunge and bought another kit car that has stood for several years, and seems to have developed some electrical gremlins.

Its a Shelsley T2 running the Rover 820 turbo, the problem I have it the Lambda sensor and Fuel pump relays chatter, and on further testing the wires coming from the ecu which use earths to activate the units every now and then become live for a blink of an eye causing the chatter.

Clearly what is happening shouldn't, but I cant think of what maybe the issue, so any suggestions would be appreciated to try.

I know the ECU's had some funny common faults with the. Like stepper problems etc.

To eliminate the relay, you could you rig up a temporary relay or replace the relay as that's the cheapest option. What relay's is the car using? If bubble relay pack, could borrow mine for testing.

Well, I have moved on a bit, it seems now that when I disconnect the cam pos sensor the problem goes, I took the sensor out and re connected it, the issue has not come back, so fingers crossed its the sensor, I have one on order.

The relay pack is one that was designed for the car, it used the yellow relays like were used on the rover.

That's a funny problem you had there. CAM sensor is only connected to the ECU with the two wires, so guess must have been confusing the ECU some how.

Car will quite happily run on just the crank sensor. I did with mine for ages before I knew mine was faulty. Made it quieter running.
