The answer to your question is the universal answer to everything!!
It depends..........................
Buy a Caterham or a Westfield and you can get a kit of parts that you bolt together, fill the fuel tank, and away you go. There's the minor (??) matter of IVA and DVLA but that's just admin..................!!
Alternatively you buy a Marlin, and a donor, and a load of other bits and pieces, and materials, and two or three years down the line you end up with a whole lot of new skills you'd never even thought of before!!
And for many, that's where the enjoyment comes in.
