Has anyone ever been tempted to build their own engine from scratch??

That sounds like quite a challenge. I suppose if someone had all the tools and kit to do it, why not!

I'm thinking about stripping my engine and doing a few replacements, but nothing quite to challenging. It’s relatively simple taking a BMW M20 2.5 to 2.7 litres with the right parts. It seems to be quite a common conversion amongst the E30 owners.

I'll probably do that the winter after the cars finished though!

I remember seeing a program some time ago where a chap was making a scale model replica of a racing ferrari (don't know which one) and he made from scratch an exact WORKING replica V12 engine. Tiny thing and the craftsmanship was incredible.

Does that count?

I would say so, that thing was awesome

I guess the biggest advantage you get in return for all the work, is that you can build the engine without any of the usuall manufacturers oversights. Like porting and polishing, lightning and balancing etc.
all during the manufacturing process.

I plan to do it myself when i get my workshop fully setup, i'm gonna build a V8 to go in mine. Wooo, its gonna be awesome to hear that baby fire up after all that work!!!!

I'd suggest you buy a couple of books to read 1 Smokey Yunicks power secrets buy S&A design & Chevy engine building S&A design. Also if you have a freind who has done this before give you a hand or advise & tips Regards Daryl


PS: In UK i'd buy a balanced crank assembly from US ... load & go & saves dosh & time... can help with that

I built my own engine from scratch, all made in wood, wooden crank, wooden block wooden pistons, wooden carb, trouble was it wooden go!!!!!
