I'm just getting back to building my V8 Cabrio - it's been a long time (a few years) since I last touched it. Is there a wiring whizz kid out there who can explain how an alternator works? I'm unsure about how the ignition light works - power source /earth/alternator. Any help and advice gratefully received!
The most common alternator wiring is very straightforward, you need a heavy duty cable to the positive connection straight from battery or starter connection whatever is easiest route. The other connection is for the warning light and is normally marked with a w, the warning light should have and ignition live and then the earth connection goes to the w connector on alternator. When the ignition is turned on and the engine not running the warning light is earthed through the alternator w connection, once up and running the alternator charges and creates positive voltage to the w connector which cancels warning light.
The positive connection on the alternator is usually a threaded 6mm stud or a wide spade connection, the w connection will be marked or if it's lucas type it is the smaller spade on the three terminal plug. hope i've made it clear it's more difficult putting it into words than doing it. Brian.
