Torque wrench

20 Dec 2011, 8:49pm
I have to invest in a new torque wrench. Can anyone tell me what are the maximum and minimum torques I am likely to encounter?

Wrenches seem to be available in low (2 - 40nm), medium (40 - 200nm) and high (60 - 300+nm) torque ranges.

Which to choose?

Just to elaborate, My inclination is to go for the high torque one, I suppose what I need to know is will I need to torque much below 60Nm?

Hi John,
I have one that covers 20-100nM which seems to cover the majority of bolts except the very high ones like the crankshaft nut.

I've got two - a small one and a large one:

Like Pete said, that's covered everything I needed (apart from the nose bolt, but that's just done up 'fufh fufh fufh fully tight' with a braker bar)

The small one is useful on stuff like the brake callipers, as you can get it into tighter spaces. IIRC, the bolts round there need to be around 20-30nm

mine's the mid range offering from machine mart from 28Nm up to about 210Nm. That does for the majority of times you need to be correct. It is a bit awkward to get into tighter spots though. I'm planning on picking up a smaller one on the weekend as at the moment for lesser torques I just have to settle for a sensible nipping up hand tight (28Nm is nothing)

I wouldn't advise wasting your money on the 300Nm+ ones (and they cost a fortune) because as others have already said, you only need it for the crank shaft nut and the hubs. I did my hubs up to 210Nm then borrowed a bigger one from a bloke in work to take them to 290Nm and I think that was about another 10 degrees of turn so if you're comfortable with it, just doing things up tight and then some may do.

If you can get a digital one that might be good so you don't have to faff around setting the gauge on the end and locking it down.

Thanks again for all the advice - Happy Christmas

I got the small one and the big one from machine mart, they've covered pretty much every situation except the crank shaft bolt and that one I just did up bloody tight!
