E36 build update.

Managed to get back in the garage for a few days.

Progress made on the pedal box and steering column. The steering rack extension pieces are now fitted to modify the 'steering rack especially made for Marlin' (but I'm not bitter!!) so the plan is to stick some wheels on it, roll it outside and give myself some room in the garage to tidy up the engine. Won't be long now!! :ohwell:

Nigel - Is that brake line attachement temporary? The IVA man takes a dim view of any adhesive / sticky pad mounts, so if it isn't, stick a rivet through the middle of the zip tie base.

I did that on my cable runs around the engine bay, and the inspector took a sharp intake of breath when he saw them - until I pointed out the rivets. :)

Jason,

Thanks for the 'heads up'

Yes. I must pay more attention / respect to the IVA man.

I put it in there as a bit of added security - just in case. You can see there is a 'p' clip close by.

But I think it will probably stay so I'll go with your rivet suggestion (or maybe another 'p' clip)

Nigel,
You mention 'steering rack extensions' in your original post, can I ask what you mean by this and if you have any photos. I have just modified my own rack (according to Marlin manual) and it doesnt look right to me, I was wondering if your problem was the same.

Thanks

That's intersting... Marlin used to supply the rack. I beleive it was a modified Ford (P100?). What are they/you using now?

Cheers

Hi Robin,

You are right Marlin will do it for you, but I thought I would have a go myself (to help the budget) I did use the P100 rack and then cut 52mm off it, machined the end to the same as the original, then cut the case down. Now I have put it on my chassis it seems to be short....gggrrrrr

Marlin supplied my rack.

And got it wrong.................!!

It was about 50mm short each end resulting in a potentially pidgeon toe'd sportster (as below) :icon_confused:

I managed to find some steering rack extension pieces from Rally Design. They are supplied as a pair and I think are available with a couple of different length options.

They are the black inserts between the track rod end and the original locking nut

The tracking isn't set up yet but I think they're probably about right. :eusa_think:

Nigel,

That is exactly how mine is, so I think I will try the extension.

Thanks for the photos and help
