Can't comment on which oil you need for your engine but it is worth sticking to the manufacturers recommendations. I've tried using lower viscosity 0W40higher performance oil such as Mobil1 in past and although it's done no damage it's made an average road car engine sound like a tractor with the tappet noise. as soon as I went back to 10W40 it was fine
I ran my donor 325i M20 on good quality semi-synthetic 20W-50 or latterly 10W-40 for many years without problems and intend to continue using the same when I eventually get up and running.
In my early motoring life I always used 20W-50 (normally Duckhams) but 10W-40 now seems to be the norm. I think fully synthetic would be wasted on the M20 engine and may even cause problems especially on a loose, high mileage example.
They do sell all grades though, and IIRC they're very helpfull if you ask questions. They also do discounts for members of car clubs, and I believe the MOC have got this deal for anyone in the club.
[EDIT]
I did recall correctly - Amazing!
