Marlin Cabrio IVA test

23 Mar 2010, 5:58pm
I am preparing my Cabrio urgently for the test,(before 27th April) but Marlin can't provide me with :-
1) The design road speed. 2) Gross weight and 3) The weights for the two axles.
I understand that a Cabrio has recently passed and I would be grateful f
if the owner would provide me with the information or point me towards a source for it.

Most of those are in his iva thread, but the speed will be based on the engine, gearbox, tyre sizes and your max speed on the speedo

For the top speed check the spec of your donor car, also check your tyre speed rating and make sure it's under that by at least 1mph or it's a fail point.

Hi David,

My cabrio went through IVA in July with re-test in September.

The values used were Axle 1 550, Axle2 700 Gross 1250. I used the Info from the Marlin construction CD which had a copy of the old SVA type form.

I put 112 for max speed on the basis that was the max of the donor sierra.

My experinces are detailed in http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2348

Good luck with the test, let us know how you got on.

Marlin Cabrio IVA test

Hello Chris,

Thanks for your speedy and very helpful reply.
As my original 1990 2.0 DOHC engine blew a gasket, I replaced it with a Ford remanufactured unit. Ford cannot provide the age of the block or even the model. VOSA are insisting on a cat, which means a new engine management system, so off to the engine tuners.
They will tune it and provide me with written details of power output, speed etc. after four days on the rolling road.

Why not use an old Ford engine to get you through IVA inspection with known manufacture dates (pre 1995). Then change your engine after it is all registered. It is cheap and easy to buy an old Sierra with a V5
You will then not require a cat (and expensive ECU)

Thanks mike. I considered this, but with the lack of time and he body on the car and newly painted, it would be too risky.

Fingers crossed!

I went to LB, and the inspector I had there was very helpful, and very fair. He didn't let me off anything, but he did allow me to do quick fixes to issues that came up on the day, as I had a full set of tools with me in Thunderbird 2 (My mate's Discovery).

Be prepared, as they say. :)

You may also want to look at http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2269 which describes my two trips to VOSA.

I'd only say that my tester didn't do everything in the manual. Some areas he never checked, like size of numberplate area, e-marking on all the lamps, or the placement of the lamps(except the fog lamp).

He used the jig to test the mudguards at the front, but not the back.....

Marlin Cabrio SVA

Hello Chris and all who responded to my request for information.

Thanks for your replies. They were all most helpful. I'm sorry not to have replied to everyone individually, but build and home demands got in the way. I have put in an application for the test at eithr Leighton Buzzard (preferred or London West (Yeading). I am still awaiting the car's return from the tuners in Uxbridge.
They have missed their quoted date by at least a week and probably more. I was hoping to be ready by 27th April, but it is out of my hands at the moment.

I shall present it hoodless and VOSA tell me that I should have no problems with the glass or petrol tank, so hope springs eternal.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Kind regards,

David Court

Glass should be no problem, both the screen and side windows on my kit were 'E' marked correctly, and they were supplied in 2002.

Fuel should be OK provided you have a locking fuel cap. I also put some heatproof insulation under the tank.

Good luck with the IVA test
