Build update

24 Oct 2008, 7:08pm
Was back in the UK last week for a few days, and have hit my first major milestone on the car, took best part of a day but my engine is now in the rear of the car. Plenty of bruises and shed blood in the process.

Quite pleased with its position in the car with the new mounts, it has almost perfect alignment between the rear hubs and the driveshafts so no nasty angles. Mind I will have to either extend the engine loom or find a new place for the ECU it wont reach the dash now.

All of the engine including the exhaust was above the rear lower chassis rails so it shouldnt ground out on the sump even if the ride height is low.

Will try and post some pic's when I'm back for a weekend in early Nov and have better access or if I can pursuade Gareth to add some before.

Have sent off the exhaust and one of the mounts so my hydraulic clutch slave mount can be finalised by the guys at Talon Sportscars and a Lamda sensor boss added to the exhaust manifold. Should be done by my return in December so can refit then.

Hi David.

Well done. It is a great feeling when you make great leaps in the build. It starts to feel like a car when you fit the engine rather than a trolley!

I'm a little confused with you ECU issue. Do you mean not long enough to fit to rear bulk head rather than dash? If so, you could mount a piece of ally sheet between the upper and lower chasis rail under the battery try. And fit it onto there. I also had a good find with the ECU. If you look under the bonnet of some 800 turbo's, they have a nice arrangment for mounting the ECU. With the relay pack. If you look under engine start section below.

It's funny you posting about a great milestone fitting the engine. I'm doing the opposite this weekend and taking it out!

Opps yeah I mean bulkhead, lol it certainly wouldn't reach the dash.

yeah thats my first though as to where to put it too.

Why are you taking your engine out? You strengthening the rear frame?

Ah I see, missed that post. Yeah guess that's a possibility for having caused some damage but never heard of that problem on that engine. Hopefully replacement shell casings will solve the problem. But sounds a big winter job. Anything else you are planning on changing whist it out?

 and I guess you dont mean a K series, actually the VAG engine would be an interesting option. I know someone who put one of those in another car it was very good.
