Reverse lamp?

19 Sep 2007, 8:05pm
I am probably doing this completely wrong but I thought that the reverse lamp would be wired via the ecu??

I have been looking for voltage on any ecu pin when in reverse only! to no avail

Have I got this arse over tit

Yep - you've got it wrong.

You use the reverse switch on the gearbox to turn the reversing lights on. The reverse switch is the device with an electrical connector, on the top of the gearbox, towards the bellhousing. From this there are two wires - you use the switch to complete a circuit. In the Civic standard installation, one side of the switch is wired to earth, the other to the large flat multiplug (the one with the starter solenoid wire in it), just downstream from the ECU.

A bit different from the Rover. A switched positive to the gearbox switch. Then to lights once selected. Lights for earth.

Hmm, you've given me cause to double check.... Helms manual shows the reverse lights being the earth path. Woops - my memory didn't work too well!

Right, tapped into that little multiplug this morning and ran a connection from what I thought was the earth side to the earth side of the lamp in neutral!

lamp did not light, put car in reverse made same connection and lamp came on!! hey yes!

knocked it out of reverse and into 1st no light so far so good put it back into reverse and lamp came on excellent.

Knocked it out of reverse and thought about wiring it perm but thought I would try it one more time and lamp did not come on......

have been playing for about an hour since and cant get it to work again??

all my connections are good?

When in reverse there is continuity between the 2 pins in the reverse plug is this correct?

how can something work then not

Just thought I had better put down exactly what i did, I unplugged the multiplug from gearbox and ran a wire from one side on the gearbox to the relevant side in the multiplug

the other wire I ran from gearbox to multi, then onto lamp

N'ah - I originally remembered (incorrectly) the switch being on the earth side of the reverse light.

The reverse switch is working correctly - there should be continuity when reverse is selected.
