Has anyone given any thought on where/how to fix the stereo in your 5exi-s?


Yeah yeah I know its meant to be a "driver's" car but I still fancy a bit of music now and then...

I have been thinking of fitting one. I want to be able to drive the car for some distance, which IMO means music for added comfort (especially if you have the soft top fitted).

I was thinking about fabricating a centre console. This way I can fit a stereo, have a small storage bin and a shelf or something for sunglasses.

I'm still at the thinking stage at the mo as I need to fit the dash, pedals and pop a seat in there to see just how much room I will have.

Obviously the easiest fit will be on the passenger side. If you fit one with a remote, this shouldn't cause much problem.

As for speakers, I was thinking of a small sub behind the seat, speakers in the door and possibly tweeters on the dash. Nothing too much, but from my experiences of open top cars, above 55mph you need some volume.

Yeah, I see your idea about a centre console - and I like it...

I'm taking my dash to be flocked in the next week or so and should hopefully pick up the seats from marlin in the next 2-3 weeks so I'll give it a go then...

p.s. so how far along are you? I've just put the engine in over the weekend... now the challenge of the cables and electrics !?!

Haven't done anything for 5 weeks now.

Been in hospital for an op on my arm. Hopefully back on it this weekend. So well behind just about everyone now I guess.

Centre console is a good idea as when my car had SVA they failed it on all those lumpy bits under dash

My son wants to fit a radio, plus some facility to play his playstation, are LCD dashboards being made?

No doubt it will be at a price.

The Motorworld catalogue has a few 'in dash' dvd players with screens that come out.

You can get 'em at any good place that sells In car audio (even Halfords).

You can reckon on £800 plus for that type though.

I honestly can't see the point in such a car though.

if you are into dvd and that sort of thing go to ebay they have units that go back into dah for about £150 plus delivery

Any more info on how you fitted the stereo dylanp?

I have since installed a stereo and it looks fine..

I bought a vauxhall fascia (from Halfords) and then used a bit of cardboard to make a 'box' around it and then fabricated fibreglass around it.. Then a 10 minute flocking job and that's that..

I fixed it under the heater controls (by using two bolts with some fixing plates for strenght) and then also I fixed an L plate to connect the bottom of stereo box to the heater (basically I drilled a hole into the footwell heater vent - it will make sense when you look at it..)

I'll take some pics at next opportunity and post...

Well lets just say that all the hours of hard work and sweat pay off as soon as you start driving the car...

Its basically a big go-kart.. Handling is great and acceleration is amazing even with just a 1.6 engine!

I had to change the front springs for some stiffer ones (as I'm a big bigger then most people and the car was 'bottoming out' over bumps...). With the new springs it feels great..

If you are ever in Central London let me know and I will be happy to take you for a spin, etc...

Sure I can arrange to be in London at some point :P Would be good to see a car not finished by the factory. +The dash looking intriguing.
