Maximum Tyre widths

12 Mar 2007, 11:11pm
Does anybody know what is the maximum tyre widths that will fit under the front and rear wings of the Sportster?

Did anyone spot what size tyres were fitted to the Marlin built cars. I can see from my photo's that they are Toyo Proxes, but I can't read the actual tyre size.

Or can somebody post the actual wing widths?

thanks Peter

I've had a look through the pictures I've got of the purple one. I can't make out any writing on the tyres but just from looking at the photo's i would estimate 225/45/R17 all round on the purple one. Possibly 205 wide.

I don't have any pictures that show the tyre size on the red customer car they had a Stoneleigh.

Peter, I forgot to mention I've tried an 17x8J with 235/45/R17 under the front wings - pictures here: http://www.msportster.co.uk/detail.asp?cat=10

There not actually mounted on the car but with wing fits nicely over the tyre width.

Thanks Patrick.

I think i'm going to go for 225's, but more for looks than performance with my 2 litre engine. !

225 will look good :D

Off topic but your M20B20 would make a great base for a 2.7 conversion :first: you can use the 2ltr head with an ETA block :) Dunno how your German is but theres lot of info here: http://truemer.cfmx.de/rubrik.cfm?cid=10 and lots if you search on www.e30zone.co.uk  (you can also get a chip from Ant for 2.7 conversions which saves buggering around with stand alone management :)

Patrick,
I'm afraid my German is that good!

Have you come across any good books on tuning the M20 engine and the 2.7 conversion you refer to.

I had a look on e30zone but couldn't find anything like a full description?

Sounds interesting, though....

There is book by a guy named Andyboy on E30Zone -hes a freelance writer for Total BMW (he's doing an article on my brothers 2.8 E36 Compact swap we did at the beginning of the year)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/E30-3-Restoration-Bible-Brooklands-Books/dp/1855206781/ref=sr_1_1/202-7680891-1474202?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174343251&sr=8-1 - this is supposed to cover it, but I've not seen a copy yet. It's one of those books I plan to buy some day :)

Also check out last months total bmw for a summery - I'll see if I can scan it for you :)
