Don't want to be negative, but if the issue is indeed the lack of airflow through the engine bay (ie air in AND air out), a chin spoiler will not work...
It would be just like trying to force more water into a bottle that is already full.

I did wonder if I'd explained myself properly with the 'chin' spoiler idea. It's not going on the front but under the rear radiator to ram air into it at speed. I might even engineer a motorised or mechanical flap that lowers into the airstream dependant on speed and/or temperature, a bit like the engine cover on a 90's 911.
That way I'm hoping that the second rad won't over cool the engine in day to day dawdle driving, but will kick in at motorway speeds and stop the temperature rising too high. And because it will be between the back wheels it won't ground going over speed bumps.
As for bonnet vents, if you remember I actually have louvres at the back of the bonnet, but they're blanked off dummies at the moment. I could always grind out the remaining fibreglass behind them I suppose...

Mister Towed, I think opening those louvres is the best idea yet and will
go a long way to solving your problems.
The D Types had them and had no probs at 170 mph at Le Mans!!
On top of the obvious cooling advantages, letting the air out of the bonnet void will reduce the tendency for the rear lip of the bonnet to 'pant' at speed.
Just kidding. I won't block up the space between the bulkhead sides and body sides. Theoretically you don't need vents if the air can flow thru to the rear wheels. I'm not sure if plywood builds would benefit from this (venting/drying the wood and prohibit condensation) or ruining it (because of mud, dirt, spash/spray).
I'm using stainless steel and coated aluminium which should handle a variarity of conditions.
I have watched with interest when you fella’s fit oversize wheels and tyres, and the result Is always an improvement on the original. They fill the arches and look good.
But one thing puzzles me, what do you do, to compensate for the extra rolling diameter?
The speedo must be out, and, to some extent the gearing, and if the wheel is quite a lot larger, The acceleration must be ruined.
Do you re-calibrate the speedo, or use a satellite driven one?
Do you change the gearbox ratios or back axle?
The most extreme example I can think of recently was Patoune on his D Type, he fitted 185 x 100 x 13 tyres, which would result in a whopping 21 % + increase in rolling diameter.
The acceleration must have been snail-like in the extreme!

I understand he races them, so I guess he must have swapped the gearbox or back axle, or both.
If you’re reading this Patoune, please, what mods did you make, I’m really interested?
I will use a different speedo. Not Triumph. I have it recalibrated as we speak. My car has 165/80/15 tyres. I had to measure the turns of the cable while pushing the car over a distance of 50 metres. They change the gears in the speedo. It will cost me about 100 pounds or so.

No offence taken Scottie, I'm not precious about this being my thread, I'm perfectly happy for it to be used as a chat room to discuss issues that are of interest to others when I change something during my tinkering phase.
As for how to compensate for the different rolling diameter of the larger tyres, a change to 175/80/14 tyres represents a 10% increase in rolling diameter over the 155/80/13's originally fitted to a Herald or Vitesse donor (not sure what Spitfires had).
As most speedos over read by around 8 -10% (a feature deliberately built in by manufacturers to ensure they comply with construction and use regulations) fitting bigger tyres on an otherwise standard drivetrain just takes out that error so your speedo is likely to be more accurate than when it was new.
I also fitted a 3.27:1 diff from a GT6 which obviously changes the gearing aft of the gearbox, where the speedo takes its drive from. As this would have made the Vitesse speedo under read by almost 20% I sourced a non-overdrive GT6 speedo to correct that error.
The result of those changes is that, when I put my car on the dyno with 175/70/14's, and the GT6 diff and speedo fitted, the speedo was spot on across the entire speed range, reading 110mph at a true wheel speed of 110mph.
My recent change to 175/80/14's will increase the rolling diameter by just under 6% over the 175/70/14's. This means that when my speedo says 60mph, I will actually be going 63.5mph. That's close enough not to get a speeding ticket
As for the acceleration being 'snail like' mine only has 79bhp but it's so light - lighter than a Lotus Elise - that even with big tyres and tall gearing it pulls like a locomotive in any gear across the whole rev range. It'll dribble along happily at 30mph in top and still storm away with a squeeze of the throttle, or you can scream it up to 45mph in first gear, 70 in second or 100 in third (on the Autobahn, of course) without even reaching the rev limit. Best of all is changing into second at 50mph when approaching roundabouts and listening to the spine tingling crackling and popping it does on the overrun

Oh, and Phil just followed a modern car along at different speeds agreed with its driver and marked the corrections on the face of the speedo glass with a marker pen. That works too.

When I spoke of "snail like" I was refering to Patoune's 21% plus increase in wheel rolling diameter, something that radical would surely wreck the accelaration? Especially considering it was a race car?
I should have added: as far as I am aware the "standard" Spitfire wheel and tyre combo was 155 x 80 x 13. Which would give a rolling diameter of approximately 22.76 inches, if that's of any use.
If you have a true 110 mph at that speed, that has to be better than a new car!! you surely have that sorted.

I am hoping to cut down on weight enough to end up with the car being no more that 600kilos if I get it right.
If I am successful, with the 1500 putting out around 70 BHP, I should
be in the same boat as yourself with over 100BHP per ton.
That should be enough.

This is a bl**dy big engine, tall, long and wide plus it weights in at over 300kg so it would need to be sat well back in a Triumph chassis.
A Ribble's out but, one of Mike's Miglia's with that long bonnet and rearward seating
I should imagine any Triumph chassis without severel upgrades is not going to be viabal. they are very thin wall chassis and rear axle , breaks etc will take a severe pounding

600kg's shouldn't be too difficult to acheive - your four pot should shave around 100kg's off the total, plus I've fitted easily fifty kilos of fripperies, like a stereo, luggage bay, water injection system, servo, steel spreader plates under the seats, etc. Good luck reaching your target.
