Hi Paul L, Those photos are quite interesting but as a solution to the lock problem it seems a bit "agricultural". As I said in my reply to carphotographer, the Fiorano solution is to put a spacer in each end of the rack to limit the lock. The Spitfire seems to have quite a small turning circle so it seems like a better and neater solution to me. When it comes time for me to do it I will be contacting Mick at Fiorano again for more specific details about what is required.
As far as a build thread is concerned, maybe. I will see how I get on although I haven't set a timescale to complete the build. However, I will be taking photos as work progresses so perhaps I could use that as a journal showing what I did etc. Has anyone done a build thread for a Fiorano before? My wife and I are off on holiday for a week and I have been warned against doing anything to the donor until after we come back. Still, I could always clean up the dash instruments while she is watching the telly! She'd never notice

Old Jock - I fully accept your point about a better way to do it.

But Car Photographer has already cut the panels out, so I'm just suggesting he simply refits them, but a bit recessed.

As for your build journal, don't worry about timescales, my build is approaching 4 years and that isn't the longest running build thread on here.

15" Wheels & Lock Limiting

I have faux Dunlop alloys on my A352, TR6 with 15x6mm holes drilled. The bulkhead in the footwells had to be moved back a good inch and it's still quite tight.

I've limited the lock with a hose clip on the outside ends of each track rod. Agricultural? Yes, it's as was recommended by Tim Dutton in the building instructions for my first kit car, a Phaeton II, in 1982. It works; it's invisible; job done.

... before we cut them I did drive the car briefly and it felt like you'd have problems doing a 3 point turn if you didn't cut into them a bit. Maybe people just get by with the restricted turning circle

Timescale wise, I don't know exactly because I'd brought it part done, but I reckon if we had worked on it constantly we could have got it all done in about 2 weeks - obviously practicalities mean that you only get a few bits done at a time so it's been quite slow in my opinion ( about 6 months) not as long as 4 years though - not sure if could wait that long - I'm chomping at the bit after 6 months!!

Hmm, an inspiration on what not to do - can't stand that wooden dashboard - yak!!

I'm with you about the dashboard at least. I do like the alloy petrol tank though.

Yeah there's some stuff I like about it - the exhaust system is cool, I wish I could have done that to mine,
I think it's mainly the colour and dash I'm not liking - seen enough of these bright red ones now to be bored of them.

And if it hadn't of been raining today it might of had an MOT by now!!

Just think of it as a large motorbike and you'll be fine!

It was more to do with not getting the filler wet in case it ruins the painting process. Hopefully Monday might be the day

I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us on Monday then. I'm heading north to Dornoch between Inverness and John O'Groats for a few days so I'm hoping for good weather too.

Got my MOT today!!

.....so on monday and tuesday I'll be doing a bit more filling and sanding - then gotta find someone to paint it - really hoping I can get it done before the kit car show in a couple of weeks!!

Any chance of a photo of how it looked going for it's MOT?

As I trying to convince myself that an unpainted car can still pass.

Ha, yeah.
I did take a couple but need to put them on Flickr before I can get them on here.
I think it was a pretty 'easy going' place as it was unpainted - they knew it was going to paint next week so 'let me off' luckily

Unfortunately I've only driven it once - about 25 foot down a driveway! The mechanic drive it off the tow truck and into the Mot.
However even on the tow truck it was turning heads

Well done with the mot. Was there any comment about the body swap never mind the body colour or lack of it? What are you going to register it as? Triumph special or Fiorano T48? Have you decided on the colour yet?

LOL - like I said - a very sympathetic station!!

I'm still thinking about colours, rosso Barchetta or maybe nissan clear red are both pretty close.

as regards naming it - I don't know if I stand an easier chance as a 'triumph special' than a 'Fiorano' - basically I'm happy with whatever they will ask less questions about - not sure if the name will make any difference to that though?

next - an idea for my grille - made out of balsa wood as a test ..... I seem to have got the wheel tracking / alignment sorted now too

and finally - the last thing holding me up before it can go to paint - the side holes we cut to allow for a full wheel lock on the steering have been shaped and are being filled - hopefully when painted they will look ok

Great use of the fish frier.

I'm sure the "hollows" in the bodywork will look like a standard feature/pit lane modification when painted.
