*I have decided to cut down my drinking for January to pay for the paint job on my Z300SWB bonnet. This explains my confession. Normal ranting will be resumed when I am back on the booze.[/COLOR]
Bloody Hell Nick you must get through a lot of the sauce !!
I thought we were all being nice to each other now!
I'm not sure if the 1.9 conversion would give you enough space or not.
Yes you could convert the 1.9 to a straight 6 but it would be loads of work by the time everything is connected up. Just bite the bullet and buy a straight 6 from the word go!!
Sorry, should've made myself clearer - the suggestion to fit a straight six into a 1.9 was in response to a question about narrowing the back end to accommodate splined wires while ending up with a car with the (more desirable) six cylinder motor rather than a criticism of the 1.9 engine.
Despite the obvious risk of it all being a bit of a ballache, I have a gut feeling that changing a 1.9's engine (and gearbox?) for a six pot is going to be easier and more likely to have been tried and tested than swapping the rear axle assembly. After all, there are a number of Z3's on you-know-what-tube running BMW or American V8 motors if you must have the full wind in the ponytail experience. Just watch out for the ground clearance and traction on your kitchen floor issues it creates though... -
Found a quote from a March last year for 7x17" Truespoke with spinners - not Dayton as I thought - at $650 each plus carriage from the States, so Turrino sounds cheaper.
Well I've taken a deep breath and amended my excel spreadsheet to budget for 2k on wheels - at the end of the day they're a massive part of the overall appearance and impact of the vehicle.
I am however, no longer scrolling down to the total at the bottom!!
If a used set comes up I'll be all over them but ultimately that's the cost of full stainless - I don't want to be worried about keeping chrome dry! Budgeting for worse case scenario. What will you use for your NEC show car? The curlys and adaptors?
I am using reverse lace appliance wheels that look similar to borranis, can take a photo if you need. We have them all over ebay US, maybe you can find a set to ship to the UK? I paid $300 for a set in mint shape.

You would never guess it but I'm a big fan of the LeMans Classic !
Hope to be there this year , not sure what I'll be driving but I should be able to do a long weekend. I can recommend the camp site at La Fleche , about 15 miles south of the circuit. Usually lots of classic owners stay there as the facilities on the circuit leave a lot to be desired and the camping municipal is very good. Even has a swimming pool etc !
Depends which crossing you make , the tunnel works out the best deal ( we use Tesco vouchers to pay for it ).Otherwise about £140 ish.
But it is a longer drive for most so more fuel.
Diesel is much cheaper in France , petrol about the same . £25 diesel each way from Calais to LeMans.
If you use motorway on the French side ( about 30 Euros in Tolls ) it is easy to do the distance in a day so you don't have to worry about an overnight stop. Again , depends how far you have gone on the UK side.
Camping Municipal at La Fleche, I think it was about £15 / night.
Basic weekend LeMans ticket was about £85 last time I went. You can pay extra if you want to go around the pits or have a stand seat. I never bother with that as there is so much to see anyway! There are many better viewing areas other than the stands too.
Don't bother with a parking ticket , there is a secret place you can park for free all weekend ( pm me ! ).
Other than that , food a drink , extra fuel for blatting around ! The roads around that area are great ! Drive the circuit if you are there earlier in the week , most of it is public road !
Excellent! perhaps we should start a e mans Classic thread so anyone going can book same eurotunnel etc?
Back to the wheels....emailed MWS this morning and got responses within 10 minutes. Rang and spoke to Craig and he was excellent. Shocked at weight of 16x7 stainless bolt on.....16.8kg - that's a lot of unsprung weight. Bit of discount on offer for a set and one the shelf ready to go out. Would need spiggots to adopt bore. Interestingly he said that in terms of going centre lock Dayton would be least track affecting option due to them using key drive on hub adaptor allowing the wheel to sit back further.
We have just commissioned some shorter splined hubs to fit with E-type 'curly hub' wheels. These will fit under the arches okay. You do have to use shallow head wheel boots though but no big deal.
I only have a photo of the first attempt which stuck out about 2", but you can imagine the revised ones just shorter. Unfortunately they are made by the best hub engineering company in the land, so do not come cheap.
They cost £595 a set of four. Most can only be safe up to 150BHP these will go to 300BHP. It seems a shame to cover them up!
