Success at last! This is a Kalifornia build just back from paint. Its Ferrari Tour de France blue and goes well with the blue roof. Now we can put it back together and make it pretty.

Is that a Ferrari 308/328 I see in the background of the last pic? Could there be a mould in the pipeline?

The blue looks the part on this car.

Do you work out of your back garden or is it just a storage area until you take them to your unit ?

Yes its a 308. Bought it with an engine loom destroyed by nibbling mouse or rat then caught fire. Nearly finished. Chris has some new models in conception but not 308. I lent him a Daytona last year but hes a busy guy and never got around to copying it. Maybe next year?

This is where I live. We have 40 acres but most is farm related land. I have put in for planning permission for a 10 car workshop but it takes time. I currently have 27 vehicles here, mostly my toys, some sale cars and some customers. We work 7 days a week, even Christmas day, which I could not do unless it was not my passion.

The Daytona is on my bucket list of cars - it would fit a Z3 but locating the Rover SD1 front indicators will be difficult now.

You could use orange plastic wrapped around to the correct shape. Then fit a round reflector with a black Ferrari decal and you are good to go. Robin hood engineering used to do this in the late 80's

How much do you charge for paint on a mx250.

It depends how much work it needs?
If the gaps are correct and all the non-paintable bits are removed £1795. More if you want us to gap and fill and cut out for lights etc.
We have it for one week in pre prep where its sanded, filled and prepared to go to the paintshop. It then takes 3 weeks, where its painted in thick filler primer, then sanded back, painted again, sanded back, then black powder is applied which highlights any imperfections and sanded again. Then the colour coats and laqueur if its a metallic finish. Finally its polished to a mirror finish. We then suggest you leave it for 3 days for the paint to fully harden.
Modern bodyshops generally do not know how to paint fibreglass cars only metal. For instance you cannot bake the paint in an oven as it shrinks the GRP and filler and you get sinkage.
From our experience paint is the most important stage as it is the difference between a good car and a convincing show standard car.

I'm looking at a colour called vw pure grey. Mostly found on vw transporter vans . I've got gunmetal grey wheels. Also quite like the grey found on the light grey fiat 500 abarth the one with red mirrors. But depending on the look of the car to what I spend. Not looking for metallic as aiming for a simple period finish.

It's always a good idea not to stray too far from 'period' colours as it can devalue the vehicle when you eventually come to sell it.

I've also been looking at a colour found on Austin 1300's. Its a maroon . Found on some Morris minors too. Also seen it on a modified ford Anglia which had similar style wheels.

The good thing about mx5 mk1's is theirs lots of company's that have come up with different shells to suit . So when I get board I can use the mechanics in their space frames. Don't want to sell it just rebody it and keep the mechanicals running tickety boo. Its been over 2years since I've driven the car so will be nice to finally drive it.
