Think i should be able to make or have 1 made cheaper with cherry bomb through backboxes. hopefully coated black in some sort of heat proof paint?
Don't quote me on this 'side exhaust' though as im still not sure if its do-able! if not then the rear of the kobra will look pretty much as that photo shop image (reg S9O DM).....
With you and your skills just about anything is do-able scotty and i do like your side exhaust! I also seen the trouble you went through to achieve it! Hopefully the Z3 is a little easyer.....
I had Chris cut the big back box off my exhaust and exit from the sides. Issue with mine was leaving the front bits in place meant the side pipes only just poked out in front of the wheels. Check my thread for photos.
If you want earlier side pipes you will need to do stuff in the engine bay and cut holes in the double skinned bodywork
WCA, I followed your thread on it and seen the problem you had with the cherry bombs scraping the floor. im hoping to either cut a hole through the double skin and somehow get a pipe through (option 1)
or if that fails cut away at the bottom of the sill and put a pipe in flush (option 2!)......
A few questions if you have time
Does your car still have the adjustable spacer on the rear springs?
Is the rear as low as it will go, and is the front drivable as low as it is?
My cars got adjustable coilovers fitted. Only the front where fitted when I drove the car home from tributes workshop but I droped it straight off at my pals garage and it now has the rear coilovers fitted but im away for another 3 weeks so I dont know how it is to drive yet. Im looking at fitting 19" or possibly even 20" alloys on so then will set the height of the coilovers once the alloys are on.
When I first started the build Danny, I don't think I had a lot of the skills I have now.
I think it was such a strong desire to get something done, and made to the image of what I had in mind, that developed the skill I needed to accomplish that.
Ref your exhaust perhaps being too low in places, the answer to that is the same as my build, use a bigger pipe flattened out to give a much lower profile. It worked very well for my car.
So well, that without the "flat" pipe, I could not have even had a side exhaust. That one is worth thinking about.
Geoff, i always work nights, there are less people about to bother you! My cabin mate hates working nights so I do the night shift! We work 12 midnight - 12 noon.
Scottie, I think I will be using the 'flattened' pipe technique as looking at that photo above, the side exhaust looks like it will scrape on every speed bump and it doesnt look like its been lowered as much as I will have mine! - Thanks Paul
Danny - Not sure if you saw this German Kobra that Tribute built up to this stage...
There was very little posted about it, but I did remember the "traditional" side pipe fitted.
Although I couldn't even tell you if it is just for show, or actually working.
( I worked my way through a lot of old threads to find more photos to add to the "Useful Info" sticky a few weeks ago. )

The ugly side pipe "arrangement" on this car was already in place when we fitted the Kobra kit. The exhaust arrangement was very unfinished and in my opinion would not have worked and given very little ground clearance. Stick to the hole through the inner wing route Danny.

Looking at pictures of the concept and what mine is hopfully going to look like when finished and im really put off by the Z3's quater side window! looks old and dated. with you doing this to the SWB...
Is there any way that i could get rid of the quater qindow and have a new '1 piece' bit of glass cut and put in? is there enough clearance in the door to be able to do this and still use the electric windows to put the window all the way down?
Here is a picture of the latest Backdraft Racing Cobra with the added GT body body option which I suppose are the air vents in the 4 wings, which I´m not too sure about.
Droped the car off at colourtech today with a few boxes of stuff and a big list of "to do's" Im moving to spain on sunday so will be leaving it with them over christmas/new year. Looks like the side exhausts are a no go as too much of the chasis has to be cut away! a bit dissapointing but il be putting fake side pipes on and hiding the real exhaust and using a tip from a diesel to direct the smoke down.
