Brilliant, when I get back the UK I might stop by a VW dealer see how much they are new as they seem a little scarce on eBay!

I assumed that would be expensive, but maybe not? If do down that route i'd just get a rim from VW and then fit a bigger tyre like the one fitted to your e46 spare. I've seen advertised a spare wheel for a BMW Z3 has a Continental 125/90/15 tyre fitted, which will give a larger rolling diameter and 20% more width.
When your back home, could you check what width rim on your E46 spare wheel is. My VW rim is 3.5J which I think should take a 125/90/15 tyre but i'm wondering if the BMW rim is 4J?

Thanks I'm in Cannes at the moment, driving to Modena tomorrow will be visiting the Ferrari museum! (not with the Sportster this year, maybe next year - I think it may have had trouble with the 42.5C between Spain and France on the motorways today!)

The tyre on the my E46 spare is 115/90/R16, dunno the rim width I'll have to check that when get home

Sorry if i'm getting rather boring about these spare tyres but I have another small update...........(the weather has been so bad 've not been able to drive the car much :sad
I've picked up another space saver wheel and tyre. This one is from a Ford Focus so it's the wrong PCD but it has a nice brand new Pirelli 125/80R15 tyre on it and only cost £10!




The 125/80R15 will give me a 23 inch rolling diameter because it is a 80% profile and a bit more tread on the road. The VW one (see above) was just a bit too skinny. Just need to get the tyre swapped over now.

Just had a thought (careful, I don't get many). If you use the space saver due to a blow out - where do you put the wheel you have taken off if it wont fit in the spare wheel well?

The original wheel will fit in the wheel well but the cover will not fit correctly and will leave a gap but you should be able to get home safely.

So here it is.....
The 15" VW space saver rim with the 125/80R15 tyre fitted. The tyre was from a 15" Ford space saver wheel.
Fits the BMW car hubs, same diameter as the road wheels and fits in the Marlin spare wheel carrier space.

Well I got myself a 15" VW space saver from ebay. It is fitted with a 125 70 15 tyre.

My car has 205 55 16 tyres giving a rolling diameter of about 24.8 inches

If I fit a 135 80 15 to the VeeDub rim that will give me a rolling diameter of about 23.5. Just over an inch smaller - should be good enough as an emergency spare I recon.

Unless anyone knows where I can get a 135 90 15 from? (135 80 15 seems quite common as it was originally fitted to a 2CV it seems!)
