You'll also affect the braking, tyres only work when in contact with the ground.

If you get the bottom wishbone running down from the upright to the chassis, rather than horizontal or slightly uphill as is normal than you can run into bumpsteer and excessive negative camber problems. It's all a matter of degree of course.

Want the body lower?

Mount it lower!

Hmm, I can't fault your engineering credentials but wouldn't a nice new Volvo, a pipe and some slippers be safer than a V6 engined Sammio with the sump cut off?

There's risk in everything. I live near a number of military air bases, both British and American, and fighter planes regularly overfly my house. By just staying at home I'm running the risk of being squashed if fifty tonnes of super high tech jet fighter falls out of the sky.

Next week I'm going to sit in an aluminium tube traveling at five hundred miles an hour with five miles of f:(ck all between me and the ground, just so I can sit in the sunshine, a known carcinogen, and drink cheap alcohol, a poison.

Mind you, as a retired bomb disposal officer I do like to live life on the edge. :bounce:

What happened to my smiley?!

I ride motorcycles, so I'm a little way off from wanting a Volvo!

Ahh, motorcycles you say? I tend to avoid those as I rather like the number of limbs, and heads, I already have attached to my torso. :eusa_naughty:

I guess you can now legitimately send me packing to the Volvo dealer...

Well, no one said I was wrong so I will stick to my way... I wish I could afford a Volvo.:bounce: :whoo:  :icon_surprised: :typing:

Or...... you take a cutting disk to it, lower it to the height you want and hope for the best :)

I've nearly done a thousand miles in my Spyder this year and as far as I'm aware it handles fine and I'm still not dead.

Let's all just agree that there are lots of ways to do this and that we all have different opinions and have a big cuddle! Or failing that, a few pints together when we do meet up :)

Sorry Dave, but I'm afraid there will always be an 'expert' who will disagree with those sentiments. My definition of 'expert' is someone who can prove that what works in practice won't work in theory.

I've driven some clapped out death traps in my time - like a Mini that only ever had three working brakes - you just drive them more carefully.

I'm not sure now what your way is?

The pre 1500 Spitfire apparently has 150lb/in springs in a couple of different lengths (not more than about half an inch in it though). Getting hold of a used pair to try out would probably be a good start. Someone on this forum probably has a pair they'd be willing to lend.

The Herald and Vitesse are actually more stiffly sprung than the Spitfire/GT6 because the saloons have to deal with much greater weight changes.

Does just cutting the springs down to restore the ride height work? Well, yes, clearly it does. If the springs are 'just' rattling loose at full droop I don't see a problem, although don't complain if the MOT inspector doesn't like it as the end of the spring should technically fit the seat (ie. closed and ground).

This Sammio forum used to be such a friendly place...I'm off, back to the Tribute page. Far less agressive:ohwell:

I probably over simplified it...
