This is a read-only archive of the old Madabout Kitcars forum. New posts and replies are no longer possible, but every thread is still here to browse and read.
Apologies for digging up this old thread but I've eventually managed to get my hands on a '97 1.8 Mk1 and am interested in how the new front opening & grille were coming on? I played around with photoshop a while ago (but I'm no expert) and really liked the way it looked. My car's taxed til next year so I'm thinking about running it for a few months to give me time to give it a good going over and iron out any problems that arise before I set about stripping it naked, ready for a new set of glad rags.
Hey, its a Mazda, there will be no problems. I think the Ast*n front is finished, but not sure about the grill itself. The Jag type front I have is very nice :-)
Is it the Jag one that looks like the original but with a smooth curved opening (for use without the chrome-surrounded Mondeo grille)?
To be honest, I like them all but was very taken by the wider opening - though it will need a grille resembling a teenager's dental braces to finish it off nicely.

Hi Bongo. Glad to hear you have tracked down a base car that fits the bill . The grille insert for the front end that you like is on my things to do list still, but I do have the alloy "u" section to make the slats, I just need half a day to do it........

I've been looking at the style of the newer AM cars and I'd be trying to replicate their style of the grille.
I'm not sure how I'd achieve this as I don't have the luxury of a workshop like you guys

Looks good, but the vertical pieces look very dark, I'd prefer if they were the same as the horizontal ones. Which style did you have in mind? And please tell me it's not going to be a similar price to the one linked above :s
The vertical slats are not meant to be seen.
I had an idea of making up a basic grille in black mesh with aluminium trim to mimic the original AM grille.
It could work but the real thing is better!!!
