Spent a few hours sorting the suspension today. I've never replaced springs before so was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was. It's got a 30mm drop using Tein springs. Apparently it should be closer to 35-40mm when fully settled. It could still go more but I can't afford coilovers. I think it looks loads better now.
Thanks guys, Swifty, cars a bit stiffer and now even more like a go-kart although I'm fairly sure one of if not both the rear shocks are goosed. It feels very low to the ground. Even so, the arches are still huge. I plan to lower the front crash bar and the bonnet a touch so it all lines up as it should do, so it'll maybe close the gap by another 10mm or so. I'm getting a lot of oily smokey smells in the car so next steps are to seal the cockpit up. I've still got holes where the drains for the ragtop fitted and a bit of a gap under the doors so just need some big grommets and some sort of weather seal.
Have a look at the original Rally spec RS200s and they were all high particularly at the front. I know we are all building road cars but I think there’s always going to be a big gap there.
Not as big a reaction as I'd expected to be honest but then I haven't really driven it that much. A few times people have chased me up the road for a closer look but I think most people have no idea what the car is immitating. Unless you're of the older generation (I'll go with 40+) or have an interest in rally classics, I don't think you'd know what it was. I've got quite a long drive over to Oxford next month so expect a few looks along the way.
Looks good Nick - did you cut the vent out in the bonnet before fixing the grille in or leave it there and fix the grille over it? I know there’s quite a bit of flex if you remove that part of the bonnet
I've left the vent filled in and the grill is just fitted over the top. I bought some mesh with tiny holes so you can't really see that there's nothing to see underneath it. I could always paint a radiator and other gubbins underneath it I suppose
New mirrors! Been meaning to fit these for ages. Ignore the bolts, they're holding the mirrors in place while the glue is setting. They actually look like they were meant for it. And, I can now see things behind me!
