Sure, I'll have to see if they will fit in my lathe I also have a 5 stud space saver in the back of my E46 which will be redundant at the end of the month as I'm having LPG fitted.

Sorry its taken a while to look at this I've been really busy the last few weeks:
This is the spare from my E46:
Fits under the cover just fine
You can't fit it with the spacer attached as it comes up to far. However you could use the 5 stud adapter / spacer as the clamp that holes the wheel on from the back. Problem is these adapters don't fit properly on the front (the bind on the brake pads).

4x100pcd and the correct centre bore too. not 100 sure on the offset, but shouldnt be far out.
secondhand / cheap, wonder if any of the larger vws of the era used 4 studs and had 15in steelies?

Need to stop by a dealer and find out how much.

The ones i've seen on ebay are 6J wide so i'm not not sure if they would fit?
I've been looking for an old one to try but not found anything yet.

After weeks of looking, i've finally found something that I think will fit.
It's a VW Corrado spare wheel which I think has the same PCD and bore hole as the e30 BMW hubs.
It fits just fine in the spare wheel well and the cover fits over OK.
I haven't had a chance to try it on the car hubs yet. I'll give it a try at the weekend. The tyre diameter is about 1/2" smaller than my current wheels and tyres but I imagine the cars supension will just adjust for that. It is after all a 'get you home' only spare.
It cost me £10 and about £20 of fuel to pick it up. It's a bit grubby with some surface rust from being stored outside but nothing a good scrub and a spray of Hammerite won't fix.
Tyre looks almost new.
I've only seen one other on eBay in about 3 months, so get watching

Brilliant, IIRC VW 4 stud wheels need spacers to bring them in line with E30 offsets, however given the Sportster is all over the place and that wheel is mega skinny you might get away with it. Worst case you'll need a hub centric spacer (which you could use to mount the wheel on the tub)
Bore is the same as is PCD

I tested the VW space saver spare wheel today.
It is ET40 offset so I just fitted it with the same spacers i'm using the road wheels.
It fits just fine and the car handled OK with it on the back or front.
The tyre is a 105x70x15 so is rather skinny and smaller daimeter than my road tyres.
I've noticed that some space savers (not VW) have 80 or even 85 profile tyres, so I might try and get a slightly bigger tyre for it.
There are more pictures here... http://www.flickr.com/photos/peters-bmwmarlin/
So there you are, a spare wheel that fits in the back carrier and fits on the car! Make sure if you are looking for one, you need a 4 hole, 15" rim. Most around are 14" rims.

I assumed that would be expensive, but maybe not? If do down that route i'd just get a rim from VW and then fit a bigger tyre like the one fitted to your e46 spare. I've seen advertised a spare wheel for a BMW Z3 has a Continental 125/90/15 tyre fitted, which will give a larger rolling diameter and 20% more width.
When your back home, could you check what width rim on your E46 spare wheel is. My VW rim is 3.5J which I think should take a 125/90/15 tyre but i'm wondering if the BMW rim is 4J?
happy hols,
Peter

Thanks I'm in Cannes at the moment, driving to Modena tomorrow will be visiting the Ferrari museum! (not with the Sportster this year, maybe next year - I think it may have had trouble with the 42.5C between Spain and France on the motorways today!)
The tyre on the my E46 spare is 115/90/R16, dunno the rim width I'll have to check that when get home

Sorry if i'm getting rather boring about these spare tyres but I have another small update...........(the weather has been so bad 've not been able to drive the car much )
I've picked up another space saver wheel and tyre. This one is from a Ford Focus so it's the wrong PCD but it has a nice brand new Pirelli 125/80R15 tyre on it and only cost £10!
The 125/80R15 will give me a 23 inch rolling diameter because it is a 80% profile and a bit more tread on the road. The VW one (see above) was just a bit too skinny. Just need to get the tyre swapped over now.
Now somebody else, please post something more interesting............

Hi Peter
Just had a thought (careful, I don't get many). If you use the space saver due to a blow out - where do you put the wheel you have taken off if it wont fit in the spare wheel well?
Kind regards

The original wheel will fit in the wheel well but the cover will not fit correctly and will leave a gap but you should be able to get home safely.

That's a no-brainer, it will go in the passenger seat
