Alternator Connections?

Guys,

Could someone have a look at their alternator real close.
There are three connections for the two wires...
The "big" wire is attached to number 1 (closest to the block)...but which connection does the Brown/Yellow "little" wire attach to?

Hi John.

Just done this on mine. It's the middle one.

I cheated while doing all these engine bits. I went out and bought a cheap Rover TI! So I could pop the bonnet at any time.

Cheers

ah bum,

i was hoping i had connected it incorrectly...
my alternator hums when at ign position II.
take the bulb out of the instrument cluster and it stops...
it's connected OK, just can't work out what i've done here...:-(

oh well yet another delay...

hi john

welcome to the club. Mine did the same. I think I broke the diode pack by keep turning the engine over without the alternator connected to the battery while i was trying to get the engine to start.

hi john

I was alright my donar was a 220 which uses the same as my 820 engine so i had a spare. but if you can pick up a diode / brush pack it is very easy and quick to change. Where you live is not far away from a place at chard. I think it was called something like Tively autos. you used to be able to get the parts from them or they would do a recon on it very cheap. I am not sure if they are still trading but they used to be on the industrial estate on the right as you head into chard from the taunton side.

Perhaps we could get together one day and compare notes as i am quite often in taunton as that is where my mother lives, up by the race course.

alternator

hi guys,
has the alternator got three spade connectors in a row with two large and one small, if so any one of the two large connectors is battery positive (heavy cable), the smaller connection is the warning light. I have fitted an alternator with this type of connector which I believe is off a 214 amongst other vehicles, I chose it because it is the most popular alternator which makes it cheap, the output is about 55amps which is ample for the 5exi.
